CHAPTER EIGHT
Elara slept in the guest room.
Or tried to.
Every time she closed her eyes, she heard wolves.
At two in the morning, she finally drifted into sleep.
She was standing in a forest.
She knew this place.
She didn’t know how.
Snow covered the ground.
Moonlight poured between the trees.
Then she heard laughter.
A child’s laughter.
She turned.
A little boy stood several feet away.
Dark hair.
Bright eyes.
He looked familiar.
“Elly.”
Her heart stopped.
She knew that name.
The boy ran toward her.
She knelt.
He grabbed her hand.
“I told you I’d find you.”
Elara looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The boy frowned.
“It’s me.”
He pointed to himself.
“Riven.”
She gasped.
The forest changed.
Suddenly there was blood on the snow.
The little boy’s smile disappeared.
A woman ran toward them.
Elara recognized her.
Her mother.
“Take her!” her mother screamed.
The boy grabbed Elara’s hand.
“I won’t let them.”
A man’s voice thundered through the
trees.
“Take the girl.”
The little Riven stepped in front of Elara.
A shadow approached.
Elara tried to scream.
But no sound came.
Then—
She woke.
Her body was covered in sweat.
Someone was knocking on the door.
“Elara?”
Riven.
She opened it.
He looked at her.
“What happened?”
“I remembered you.”
His face changed.
“What?”
“When we were children.”
Riven went completely still.
“What did you see?”
“Snow.”
Silence.
“Your mother.”
His jaw tightened.
“Anything else?”
“A man.”
Riven’s eyes darkened.
“Did you see his face?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
He looked away.
“Because you aren’t ready.”
Elara stepped closer.
“I’m tired of hearing that.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She touched his chest.
“You keep telling me I’m in danger, but
you won’t tell me why.”
Riven stared at her hand.
Neither moved.
For a moment, the distance between
them disappeared.
His breathing changed.
Elara’s heart raced.
Riven leaned closer.
Then stopped.
He stepped back.
“Go back to sleep.”
She stared at him.
“Why did you stop?”
His eyes met hers.
“Because if I don’t, I won’t be able to.”
He walked away.
Elara closed the door.
Her heart was pounding.
She hated him.
She wanted to trust him.
And she was beginning to realize those
two things could exist at the same time.
