HIS LAST SECRET Chapter 7: The Truth and The Glow

556 Words
Chapter 7: The Truth and The Glow **Part 1: The Truth** It was a Tuesday. Rainy. The kind of Lagos rain that makes traffic worse and hearts heavier. I was at work. Minding my business. Healing. Thriving. Or at least pretending to. Then my email pinged. Subject: We need to talk. From: halima.bello@g*******m My chest tightened. Halima. The "little secret". The "one night mistake". I almost deleted it. But curiosity is a dangerous thing. I clicked. --- "Hi, I don’t expect you to read this. But I’m tired of hiding. And I’m tired of him lying to both of us. It wasn’t one night. It was 8 months. While he was telling you he loved you. While he was telling me he was leaving you. The texts? The note? That was me. I was "A friend". Because I was tired of being the secret. I’m sorry for how I did it. But I’m not sorry for telling you. You deserved to know. I’m leaving Lagos. I hope you find peace. - H" --- I read it three times. Eight months. Not one night. The floor didn’t fall out from under me. Because I was already on the ground. And I had already started building myself back up. So instead of breaking, I laughed. Bitter. Tired. Free. I forwarded the email to him. No message. Just the forward. He called immediately. I didn’t pick up. He texted: "She’s lying. It was only once." I blocked him. The truth didn’t hurt this time. Because the truth set me free. --- **Part 2: The Glow** **Month 2** I cut my hair. Big chop. Not for him. For me. New hair, new me. My skin was glowing. Therapy was working. Running was working. Saying "no" was working. **Month 3** Promotion. Senior Writer. My boss said "Your work has depth now. What changed?" "Heartbreak," I wanted to say. I said "Growth" instead. **Month 4** Stary Spa hit 10k reads. Comments: "Queen we see you" "This is healing" "Chapter 6 saved me" Strangers were healing because I chose to write my pain. **Month 5** He saw me. At a book event. New dress. New hair. New light in my eyes. He froze. I smiled. Not the sad smile. The "I’m okay without you" smile. He walked over. "Hey." "Hey." "You're... you look good." "Thank you. I am good." And I walked away. Didn’t look back. Because closure isn’t a conversation. Closure is peace. --- **Part 3: The Letter To Myself** That night I wrote one last thing. "Dear Me, Remember the girl at Tarkwa Bay at 2:47 AM? She thought she was dying. She wasn’t. She was being reborn. Remember the girl who got the email about 8 months? She thought it would break her. It didn’t. It freed her. You are not the girl who got cheated on. You are the girl who chose herself. You are not the girl in Chapter 5. You are the woman in Chapter 7. And the best chapters? They haven’t even been written yet. Love, Future You" --- I posted Chapter 6 and 7 on Stary Spa that night. The comments came in: "THE GLOW UP" "SHE WON" "HALIMA EXPOSED HIM" "I’m crying and clapping" And me? I closed my laptop. Made tea. And slept. 8 hours. Dreamless. The war was over. And I won.
