Chapter 2: The Note
I didn’t sleep.
Not really.
I just lay there next to him, counting his breaths, pretending mine were normal.
By morning he was up early, kissing me goodbye like nothing happened.
"Have a good day, baby. Text me."
And I smiled.
Because that’s what I do. I smile through the cracks.
Work was hell. AI ads crashed. A client wanted revisions in 2 hours.
My head felt heavy.
But the worst part?
Every time my phone buzzed, my heart jumped.
Was it him? Was it "Her ❤️"?
I told myself I was overreacting.
Maybe "Her" was a sister. A cousin. A friend.
People have nicknames.
Right?
But then I found it.
I was putting his hoodie back in his bag after lunch.
We’d met briefly between my meetings. He was rushing.
And something fell out of the pocket.
A folded note.
Cheap paper. Creased like it had been read a hundred times.
My hands were shaking before I even opened it.
"Don’t ever find out.
I never stopped wanting you.
Meet me tonight?
- H"
H.
Her.
His last secret.
The room went quiet.
Even the AC sounded too loud.
I folded it back exactly how it was.
Slid it back in the pocket.
Zipped the bag.
When he came back to drop off food for me later, he hugged me tight.
"You look tired," he whispered.
"I am," I said.
But not for the reasons he thought.
That night I stared at my ceiling again.
2:17 AM. Again.
And I realized something terrifying.
The secret wasn’t that he had someone else.
The secret was that I was starting to wonder if I wanted to know the truth at all.
Because if I knew... I’d have to decide.
Stay and fight for us.
Or walk away and protect the peace I spent a year building.
And I don’t know which one hurts more.
