Chapter 4: The Confrontation
I didn’t sleep.
Again.
2:17 AM turned into 5:43 AM and I was still staring at the ceiling.
He came in around 6.
Smelled like soap and something else.
Something I didn’t want to name.
"Morning, baby," he said, voice soft. Tired.
He kissed my forehead like he always did.
Like nothing was wrong.
And that’s what broke me.
I sat up.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought he could hear it.
"I need to ask you something."
He froze for half a second.
Just half.
Then he smiled. "Okay. What’s up?"
"Who’s H?"
The room went silent.
Even the fridge stopped humming.
His face didn’t change.
Not really.
But his eyes did.
For a second, there was panic.
Then it was gone. Replaced with calm.
That calm voice that always made me feel safe.
"Baby, what are you talking about?"
"Don’t."
My voice shook.
"Don’t do that. Don’t play dumb with me.
I saw the texts. I found the note.
‘Don’t ever find out. I never stopped wanting you.’
Who is she?"
He ran a hand through his hair. Sighed.
Like I was the problem for asking.
"It’s not what you think."
"Then what is it?"
I was standing now. Arms crossed. Trying to look strong when I felt like glass.
"Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re lying to me."
He stepped closer. Tried to touch me.
I moved back.
"Her name is Halima," he said finally.
The name hit me like a slap.
"She’s... she’s from before. We dated two years ago. It was messy.
She won’t let go. She keeps texting me. Showing up.
I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry."
"So the ‘I love our little secret’ texts?"
"She’s delusional. She thinks we’re still together."
"And the note? ‘Meet me tonight?’"
He looked down.
"I told her no. I swear to you. I haven’t seen her."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
That calm voice. Those eyes. The way he said my name.
But then my phone buzzed on the bed.
Unknown number.
Again.
"Ask him where he was last night.
- A friend"
My stomach dropped.
I looked up at him.
"Where were you last night?"
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
And for the first time since I met him...
He didn’t have an answer.
2:17 AM.
And now, the truth was finally starting to show.
