He called her a couple of times but got no answer. She was not home; that discouraged him. He wanted to speak to her immediately.

He immediately sought a glass of water. In reality, he needed a strong liquor; but he knew he couldn't hold alcohol well and needed all the clarity he could.
He filled the glass and drank it all in one go. Then he began to look out the window, a bit to look for his wife to arrive, a bit to tidy up once more the very confused ideas he had.
