Chapter 2 – The Contract

552 Words
The heavy door opened with a quiet click. Serena stepped into a room she wasn’t meant to notice, the air sharp with the scent of leather, cedar, and power. A single chandelier hung above, its light reflecting off a polished mahogany desk where a man sat. He didn’t rise. He didn’t smile. He didn’t even blink—at least, not in the way that mattered. “Serena Vale,” he said, voice low, precise, commanding. Her heart stuttered. “You… you don’t know me.” “I know enough,” he replied, eyes sharp as knives. Black hair swept perfectly, suit tailored like armor. Every inch of him screamed control. Adrian Blackwood. Her fingers itched to retreat, but she didn’t. She had learned long ago that fear was a luxury she couldn’t afford. “What do you want from me?” Her voice was steady, though her pulse raced. Adrian leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on the desk. “Obedience. Truth. Six months of your life under my rules.” “Excuse me?” she asked, disbelief creeping in. He didn’t flinch. “I need someone I can trust. Completely. Someone who can survive my world—and I’ll give you everything in return.” His gaze bore into hers. “We both have something to gain.” “Everything?” she asked skeptically, the word tasting bitter on her tongue. “Protection. Housing. Money. Safety.” He didn’t mention love. He didn’t need to. That wasn’t the deal. She crossed her arms. “And the catch?” “You belong to me for six months. No exceptions. You live here, follow the rules, and never lie to me. Do that, and you leave with your life—and more—intact.” Serena’s stomach knotted. Belong. Control. It sounded like a trap. And maybe it was. “I don’t do contracts,” she said, her voice low but firm. He leaned back, uncaring. “Contracts are words on paper. But people like us… we make them real with action. You want freedom? This is how it works.” She studied him. Cold, calculating, unyielding. Yet there was something else. Something that made her pulse thrum—not fear, but… curiosity. “What happens if I refuse?” “Then you walk out,” he said simply. “And someone else takes your place.” Her chest tightened. The threat was subtle, but unmistakable. Someone wanted her dead—or at least wanted her gone. This man wasn’t just offering protection. He was offering a shield, at a price. Silence hung between them. Then Adrian slid a black envelope across the desk. “Read it. Decide.” Serena hesitated. The envelope felt heavy, not just in weight, but in consequence. Inside were papers she could barely understand: terms, rules, numbers… life or death disguised as a contract. She swallowed. Her mind raced, memories flashing—her missing sister, the crime she didn’t commit, the nights she’d run with nothing but hope. She had a choice. And somehow, deep down, she already knew she wouldn’t walk out. Slowly, deliberately, Serena reached for the pen. She signed. Adrian’s lips curved, almost imperceptibly. “Good. Welcome to my world.” The ink was barely dry before she realized: nothing would ever be the same again.
