The ground beneath the reactor didn't just shake.
It answered.
A deep, rhythmic pulse rolled through the structure like a heartbeat too large for the city to hold.
Ethan felt it through his boots first.
Then his bones.
Then his teeth.
Nolan went still.
That alone was enough to make Ethan's stomach drop.
"What did you just say?" Ethan asked quietly.
Nolan didn't look at him.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
The siren inside the reactor changed pitch—lower, heavier.
More intentional.
Like something waking up and realizing it was alive again.
Maya's voice came through the comm-link immediately.
"Ethan. Get out of there. Now."
"I'm kind of busy—"
A loud c***k of static interrupted her.
Then her voice returned, sharper.
"I'm serious. I'm detecting a mass kinetic surge under the facility. That signature—"
She stopped.
Ethan swallowed.
"What is it?"
A pause.
Then:
"…It matches Breaker."
Silence.
For half a second, Ethan thought he misheard her.
Then the entire reactor chamber shuddered.
A section of the lower floor ruptured.
Steel tore upward like paper.
And something rose through it.
Not a man stepping in.
Not an entrance.
An eruption.
Concrete exploded outward in a widening crater as a massive figure forced its way up from beneath the facility.
Breaker.
But not the same Breaker.
Not exactly.
His body was heavier now—reinforced plating integrated into his frame like grafted armor.
Cracks of orange energy ran deeper across his skin, like molten veins under pressure.
And his eyes—
weren't just focused anymore.
They were targeting.
Like a weapon locking on.
Ethan stepped back instinctively.
"…Okay," he muttered. "That's worse."
Breaker tilted his head slowly, as if reacquainting himself with reality.
Then he spoke.
His voice was lower.
Controlled.
"I remember you."
Ethan's throat went dry.
Nolan stepped forward slightly.
"That's not him," he said.
Ethan looked at him sharply.
"What do you mean 'not him'?"
Breaker took one step forward.
The entire chamber vibrated.
"Designation confirmed," Breaker said flatly.
Nolan's expression tightened.
"That's what I mean."
He glanced at Ethan.
"They didn't just wake him up."
A second step.
The floor fractured beneath Breaker's weight.
"They upgraded him."
Ethan's heart slammed against his ribs.
"That's not a person anymore."
Breaker's head snapped toward Nolan.
Fast.
Too fast.
The air popped.
He moved.
Ethan barely registered it.
Breaker crossed half the chamber in a single blur and slammed into Nolan with a kinetic shockwave punch.
The impact detonated through the reactor wall behind them.
Nolan was thrown through steel support beams, vanishing into debris.
Ethan reacted instantly.
"NO—"
He launched forward.
Breaker turned toward him without urgency.
Like this was scheduled.
Expected.
Ethan hit him mid-step with a charged strike.
Blue energy exploded on contact.
Breaker didn't move.
Not even an inch.
Ethan's eyes widened.
That had never happened before.
Breaker looked down at him.
"You are inefficient."
Then he grabbed Ethan by the chest.
And threw him.
Not slammed.
Not punched.
Thrown.
Ethan flew through the chamber, crashing into a suspended catwalk and bending it under the force.
Pain detonated through his ribs.
He barely managed to stay conscious.
Maya's voice screamed through the comm-link.
"Ethan, get out! You can't fight that thing like this!"
"I'm noticing!" he snapped back.
Breaker was already moving again.
Each step cracked the reactor floor deeper.
Like the structure itself was becoming unstable under him.
Nolan's voice cut in through the rubble nearby.
"Ethan…"
He pushed himself up slowly from the debris.
Blood at the corner of his mouth.
"…don't fight him head-on."
Ethan stared.
"That's your advice?"
Nolan's eyes flickered.
"I built systems like him."
That stopped Ethan cold.
"What?"
Nolan wiped his mouth.
"They used the same framework on multiple subjects."
He looked at Breaker.
"But he's the prototype for kinetic suppression adaptation."
Breaker's head tilted again.
As if recognizing the word prototype.
Then he moved.
Faster than before.
The air cracked.
Ethan barely dodged the strike, feeling the shockwave tear through the space where he had been standing.
The catwalk behind him disintegrated.
Nolan raised a hand.
Static interference surged across the chamber.
Breaker paused mid-motion.
Just for a second.
Ethan saw it.
An opening.
He rushed forward.
"This is our chance!"
Nolan didn't argue.
For once.
He synchronized instantly.
Static interference flooded the reactor systems.
Lights flickered violently.
Breaker staggered.
Just slightly.
Ethan jumped.
Built full charge.
No hesitation.
No restraint.
He drove a kinetic-locked punch directly into Breaker's chest.
The impact detonated.
Blue energy collided with orange fracture force.
The shockwave blew out every remaining light in the chamber.
For a moment—
everything went silent.
Ethan landed hard, sliding across broken metal.
He looked up.
Breaker stood still.
Then—
he smiled.
Slow.
Terrible.
"Confirmed," Breaker said.
Ethan froze.
"What?"
Breaker tilted his head.
"Adaptive threshold exceeded."
Nolan's voice sharpened instantly.
"Ethan—move!"
Too late.
Breaker's body flared bright orange.
Every fracture line across him ignited.
The reactor chamber screamed as kinetic energy condensed around him like gravity itself had inverted.
Then he released it.
A pulse of force unlike anything Ethan had ever seen.
Not a shockwave.
Not an impact.
A collapse of space under pressure.
Ethan was thrown backward instantly, slamming through the far wall and into a maintenance corridor.
Everything rang.
His vision blurred.
The suit's blue lines flickered dangerously.
Maya's voice was frantic.
"Ethan, I'm losing your signal—what's happening?!"
He coughed.
"I think—"
Another explosion of force ripped through the reactor.
Dust filled the corridor.
Breaker was advancing.
Slow.
Unstoppable.
And now fully active.
Nolan appeared beside Ethan through a shattered wall, barely standing.
"We can't win this normally," he said.
Ethan wiped blood from his lip.
"Good thing I'm not normal."
Nolan looked at him.
For a second, something almost like approval passed through his expression.
Then:
"There's a core stabilizer beneath the reactor."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means if we overload it," Nolan said, "the system collapses."
Ethan looked back toward the roaring chamber.
Breaker was getting closer.
Every step shaking reality itself.
"And that kills him?"
Nolan hesitated.
"…It resets him."
That wasn't comforting.
But it was something.
Breaker turned the corner ahead of them.
Slowly.
Now only twenty meters away.
He stopped.
Looked at both of them.
And spoke.
"You are attempts."
Ethan stood.
Pain everywhere.
But so was something else.
Focus.
Determination.
Pulse energy building again.
Nolan stepped beside him.
Static flickering across his arms.
Breaker raised one hand.
The reactor shook violently.
"Termination required."
Ethan exhaled.
"Yeah," he said quietly.
"Try it."
And both of them moved.
Together.
Toward the thing that refused to stay down.
