But in the way pressure filled the air.

Kinetic and network interference.
Breaker noticed immediately.
His head tilted slightly.
"Synchronization detected."
That wasn't a question.
Ethan didn't slow down.
Neither did Nolan.
"Left!" Nolan snapped.
Ethan reacted without thinking, veering as a massive shockwave slammed into the space they'd just occupied.
Concrete vaporized.
The floor behind them caved in.
They split instinctively.

He pivoted and drove a fist into the ground.
The entire corridor fractured in a rising wave of destruction.
Ethan jumped.
Nolan vanished into static distortion for a half-second, reappearing above a broken support beam.
Ethan landed on a slanted wall, absorbing impact, redirecting momentum down the corridor.
They were moving like pieces of a system now.
Not separate fighters.
A rhythm.
Breaker advanced through the destruction calmly.

Nolan's voice came through clipped.

"Where is it?"

"And how do we get there?"
Nolan looked at him.
"Through him."
Ethan exhaled.
"Great."
Breaker arrived again.
This time faster.

Ethan barely blocked the strike—his arms screaming under the impact.
The kinetic feedback almost broke his guard.
Nolan reacted instantly.

"I know!" Ethan shouted mid-dodge.
"You cannot 'I know' this!"
"I'm kind of busy!"
"Ethan!"
He ducked a swing that obliterated a wall behind him.
Nolan appeared beside him again.
"Stop talking," Nolan muttered.
Ethan almost laughed.
"Tell her that."
Another shockwave hit.
They were forced apart.
Breaker stepped between them.
A wall separating systems.
"Termination sequence escalating," he said.
Ethan stood, breathing hard.
"So that's your whole personality now?"
Breaker looked at him.
"You resist designation."
"Yeah," Ethan said. "I do that."
Breaker raised both hands.
The air tightened.
Pressure built so fast Ethan felt it in his skull.
Nolan's eyes widened.
"Ethan—don't let him compress the field!"
But it was already happening.
The space between them was shrinking.
Like reality itself was being folded inward.
Ethan gritted his teeth.
His suit flared bright blue.
He forced kinetic output—not outward, but against the compression.
A stabilizing burst.
The pressure held.
For a second.
Nolan moved instantly.
He threw both hands forward.
Static interference slammed into the compression field.
Breaker's head tilted sharply.
The system faltered.
Ethan seized the opening.
He launched.
Not at Breaker.
At the floor.
"Now!" Nolan shouted.
Ethan slammed both fists into the weakened structural grid.
Kinetic energy surged downward.
Nolan amplified it through the networked systems.
A cascading overload sequence began.
The floor beneath Breaker destabilized.
The reactor's internal pathways lit up red.
Warning systems screamed.
Breaker looked down.
Then up.
And for the first time—

"Stabilizer breach detected."
Ethan landed beside Nolan.
"You said this would reset him," Ethan said quickly.
"It will destabilize the system controlling him."
"That's not an answer."
Nolan didn't respond.
Because Breaker was moving again.

The chamber itself cracked under his acceleration.
Ethan and Nolan ran.
Straight toward the reactor core chamber.

Lights flickered violently between red and white.
Maya's voice cut through again.
"Ethan, I'm losing structural readings! You need to get out—NOW!"
"No time!" Ethan snapped.
They burst into the core chamber.
And froze.
The stabilizer unit was massive.
A circular structure embedded beneath the reactor.
Half-destroyed.
Still active.
Barely.
Arcs of unstable energy spiraled around it like a dying heartbeat.
Nolan stepped forward.
"There."
Ethan looked at it.
"And we just… overload it?"
"Yes."
A pause.
"That's vague."
Nolan shot him a look.
"We've been doing vague survival for thirteen chapters."

Behind them, Breaker entered the chamber.
Slow.

The sound of destruction followed him like an echo.
He stopped at the threshold.
Looked at the stabilizer.
Then at them.
And something changed.
His voice came quieter.

Less system.

Ethan frowned.
"What did you say?"
Breaker raised a hand.
And for a split second—
the orange fractures across his body flickered.
Like interference.
Like hesitation.
Nolan noticed immediately.
His expression shifted.
"That's not fully integrated," he said quietly.
Ethan looked at him.
"What?"
Nolan stepped forward slightly.
"The system didn't completely overwrite him."
Breaker's head tilted again.

His arm trembled.
The chamber shook violently.
"Override failing," Breaker said.
Ethan's heart skipped.
Nolan turned to him fast.
"Now."
Ethan didn't hesitate.
He ran toward the stabilizer.
Breaker moved to stop him—
but Nolan stepped in.
Static exploded outward.
A direct clash.
Breaker slammed through the interference—but it cost him seconds.

He reached the stabilizer core.
Placed both hands on it.
And released everything.

Overload sequence initiated.
Breaker roared.

Nolan reached Ethan's side.

The stabilizer collapsed inward.
And everything went white.
When Ethan woke up, the first thing he noticed was silence.

Just distant dripping water.
He sat up slowly.
His body hurt everywhere.
Nolan lay nearby, unconscious but breathing.
The chamber was… different.
Calmer.
Dead.
The reactor core above them had dimmed to a dull glow.
Ethan exhaled shakily.
"…Did we win?"
Nolan stirred slightly.
Before either of them could answer—
a low voice echoed from somewhere deeper in the structure.
Not Breaker.
Not Nolan.
Something else.
"Subject anomaly… persistence confirmed."
Ethan froze.
Nolan's eyes opened instantly.
Both of them turned toward the darkness beyond the chamber.
And for the first time—
they realized something terrifying.
Breaker wasn't the system.
He was just one part of it.
