Chapter 18

I waited with Gwen and Gayle cloaking us from everyone. My magic swirled around us so no one could sense us either. We waited for the car to pull in signaling the ambush. I told them once the fighting started to join their family to watch over the others for me. I would never let them know that I was sending them away from me. I knew they could handle themselves but I would keep them safe without them knowing what I did. We could see the car pull into the mouth of the drive. My eyes went to the chair I knew the hell hound would occupy. Gwen and Gayle loosened their grip on my legs. I would have knelt with them but they refused. They told me I had to be ready and kneeling with them was not being ready. I sent both of them reassuring waves when they tensed up. The car pulled in front of the house. I felt the hell hound first. He must be able to cloak himself as well. Alex led Alistair and Aiden toward the car. I tapped both girls on their hands. They both looked up to me and nodded. I let them leave as fire shot up between us and the car. I could see the hell hound now. Both girls slipped away from me carefully. I saw Eren and Jasper jump into the fire immediately. They were magnificent in the flames. I felt the pride in my mate. I heard the hell hound curse under his breath. He was not expecting the others to get involved. I stood behind him fully visible to anyone who looked my way. I smiled at his disgruntled ramblings. He didn’t know we were prepared for him. I watched Jasper extinguish a row of flames preventing Phillip from exiting the vehicle. Phillip darted out toward the back door. Eren stopped flames from engulfing him as he jerked the door open. I saw him pull my mother into his arms before taking off at full speed. The hell hound growled low when he saw my mother escape. I watched Jackson walk toward the car completely at ease. He ignored the flames that came his way. Jasper stopped them all before they could reach him. I marveled at my mates while they acted like this was any other day. Jackson reached the other door and opened it. He helped my father emerge from the back. They walked away with Jasper following them. My grin grew when I heard the hell hound curse under his breath with a growl. “Not working out the way you planned?” I couldn’t help myself any longer. He shot up out of the chair whirling around to face me. I watched behind him to see Daryl get out of the car laughing. Eren was escorting him away from the danger. I smiled at our new guest and focused all of my attention to him. “How did you…” “Surprising I know. Do you have a name? Or shall I make one up?” “You don’t deserve to hear my name.” He spat the words out like I was beneath him. “Very well Poochie. May I know why you are here attacking me and mine?” I moved slowly towards the banister. “Don’t call me that.” He growled. “Well if you don’t tell me what name to call you then I must make up one myself. How about Spot? Rover?” He growled louder at those names. “Well aren’t you difficult. Fine, I really don’t care about your name anyway.” “How did you get behind me.” I could feel his anger and shock coming off him. “Does it matter?” “YES!” He roared. “Let’s not lose our civility now. I was here waiting for you if you must know. Kind of like the cloaking ability you used to get here. Handy little trick if I do say so myself. So are you willing to talk to me or do you just want to fight it out? I know you’re a demon but you still deserve to have a conversation if you choose.” “You must be delusional. You’re no match for me little human.” I sighed allowing my magic to toss him onto the drive close to the car. I walked around the corner of the house towards him. I could see my mother and father standing with Jackson. The shock on their faces caused a smile on my face. I sent them love before going to face the hell hound. He was frothing at the mouth now. His features were becoming more canine like with his emotions taking over. “I see you can’t hold that form for very long. Pity really. It was rather pleasant.” I taunted him waiting for the others to come. “You little b***h. I will kill you while they watch.” He roared at me. Flames shot up from the ground all around me. I heard a scream from my mother. My bothers were watching in horror. I laughed as the flames danced along my skin. I felt the heat intensify around me but I just remained where I was. My demon blood was protecting me from the flames. I felt Jasper in my mind. He helped me to control the flames until they were encasing my hands. The hell hound was crouching down in shock. “I apologize, was that meant to burn me? You should probably have done some research about me before half assing an attack. Poor planning on your part really.” “What are you!” A piercing scream rocked the silence around us. “Ah there are your distraction trio. Sounds like one of them isn’t fairing too well.” He growled low and launched himself at me. I stood my ground smiling. Before he could touch me, I jumped into a flip over his body as it sailed under me. I landed on my feet while he put on the brakes. He was shocked but he tried to shake off. He was watching me now. He had underestimated me, maybe he had learned from that mistake. I sighed when I saw him charge toward me again. I moved differently than before, I slid to the side leaving my foot in his way. He tripped and tumbled away from me. “I guess you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I sounded bored but I was on alert. He roared and tried to engulf me in flames again. I frowned and shook my head. His anger was getting the better of him. Then something happened I hadn’t anticipated. John came out onto the porch with Adam. I froze completely. The hell hound saw me looking toward the house and growled triumphantly. I extinguished the flames around me. He didn’t aim for me this time. I heard John gasp as a fire stream made its way toward him. Jasper jumped in the way taking the fire and redirecting it back to the hell hound. My heart was racing. Why were they here? I told them to stay away. I felt the ground move under my feet. Daisy. I spotted her standing with her mother Rose directing everything they had at the hell hound before me. He was growling curses at us while trying to keep his balance. Jasper went over to Daisy in case he sent fire their way. I hadn’t noticed Eren had disappeared. The hell hound sent another stream of fire at Jasper then me. While we put out the flames, he sent another stream at John. I screamed as Adam stepped in front of John, taking the hit. My magic lashed out hard. I heard the hound whimper from the impact. Jackson caught Adam before he could fall. The look on his face told me everything. Adam wasn’t dead yet but he wouldn’t last long. I glared at the hound then. My power swirled around us both. He looked panicked when we both rose off the ground. “I was trying to be nice to you and you just wouldn’t have it. I gave you the chance and you threw it away. You will die this day. I hope Styx has fun with your afterlife.” His eyes widened at my words. I was glowing brightly and magic infused in my words. I reached my hand toward him. He began to struggle but it was in vain. I had him the moment we lifted off the ground. I began to close my hand into a fist. My magic rushed into his body, straight to his heart. I kept closing my hand while my magic began to constrict his heart. He screamed in a panic. I refused to stop until he was dead. It was taking too long for me. I kept my hand in a fist and jerked it to my chest. His heart flew toward me. I caught it with my other hand. I conjured up the flames he used on us and let it incinerate his heart in my hand. I dropped down quickly after that. His body just dropped to the ground. I was at Adam’s side as soon as my feet were on the ground. My body was still glowing softly when I reached him. His breathing was labored. I cradled his head in my lap. I began to cry watching him struggle to stay with me. Please let my healing work. I tried and tried but I couldn’t heal all the damage fast enough. The fire was racing through his system, destroying everything in its way. I began to sob when I realized there was no healing this fire. “Please don’t cry baby.” Adam’s voice was strained. “I’m so sorry Adam. I tried…” My voice was broken by a sob. He gave me a pain filled smile. “It was meant to be baby. You have to keep fighting. I love you.” I watched the life leave his eyes after that. I clung to him sobbing. John was next to me crying silently. I felt Jasper and Jackson close to me. I felt when Jonah and Jeremy arrived, nothing mattered right now. No one said anything as I held my human mate. I felt the Goddesses join us before someone gasped. I looked up right at Styx. The tears flowed freely as she gave me a small smile. “We will take care of him for you until you join him in the afterlife. He was never meant for this world.” Styx knelt down on the other side of Adam as she spoke. “I love him.” My voice broke. “We know Sweetie. We are here to take him home. He will be waiting for you there.” Gaia pulled me away from Adam. I looked at her like she was crazy. I would take care of his body myself. Hecate stepped forward then. She gave me a sad smile as the others joined her. They joined hands. “We will take his body with us. He deserves the highest honors we can give him. He will be cared for like our own. I am sorry my daughter.” Hecate spoke to me softly. I watched them fade away with Adam’s body. Jackson pulled me to him then. I could feel the love from the Goddesses and their remorse for his death. I also felt them taking some of my grief from me. We are sorry for taking him from you Raven. He will be treated as if he were one of us. We are with you even now. Selene’s voice played in my mind like a melody. The tears began to slow, I closed my eyes to calm myself. “Does someone want to explain this to me?” John sounded confused. “Our Goddesses have taken the human with them to give him the honor of a blessed burial.” My eyes flew open as my father spoke. “His name was Adam. He was mine.” I spoke softly but fiercely. “Gracie, he didn’t know Adam. He was only explaining it to your friend.” Alex tried to placate me. My anger rose but John beat me when he spoke out. “Adam wasn’t just a human. He was a hero. And I am her father whether she is my blood or not.” Jackson let me go so I could hug John. “He was a hero. The Goddesses will take care of him now. He will be buried by them as the hero he is. And you will always be my dad.” John hugged me closer to him. Rachel came running out with Ben. She came over to us crying. “I saw him jump in front of John. Why did those women take him though?” “I’ll explain everything to you sweetheart. Come with me to the command center. The others will need to be informed of Adam’s passing.” John released me but not before he placed a kiss on my forehead. Another tear fell as I let him go. This was the only thing I could do. The humans here were in more danger than the others. Easier to kill. I had to get all of them away from me. If they stayed, I would lose all of them. I stood in a daze while the remaining humans went to break the news to everyone. “Vivian?” I heard my father speak hesitantly. “I’m alright. I was taught a hard lesson today. Any human near me will be in more danger than anyone. I will lose them all if they stay. If I don’t want to lose my family then I have to send them away. It will break my heart to do so, but at least they’ll live.” I took a deep breath. “Jason? I know you’re still there. Get the flight ready for all of you to return to HQ with John today. I won’t lose anyone else. If you need me then I’ll come but for now you all need to get away from me.” I took the earpiece out and handed it to Sara as she passed by me. She didn’t look at me as she made her way toward the command center. I took another deep breath before walking away from everyone. No one stopped me when I took off in a sprint. I didn’t know where to go but I knew I had to get away from everyone. I ran around the house headed for the trees. No one tried to follow me or hinder me. I ran into the trees and kept going. I knew this was a lesson that I had to learn but it still hurt. I kept running until I reach the clearing I had stumbled upon before. I broke through the trees and stopped. I screamed at the top of my lungs, letting everything go into the universe. I would be with him again when death took me back to him. He would always be in my heart even through the grief and pain. Without thinking, I turned and ran back through the trees to my home. At least I would be keeping the rest of them safe.
