Annie looked up from her phone at the sound of the police siren. It wasn’t specific to the police, but a siren nonetheless. She couldn’t see anything from her position along the railing of the ferry, near the back. “Mom,” Bri said, and Annie dropped her phone into her coat pocket. She glanced at her daughter and then out to the water again. “Everyone please step back from the railing,” a man said over the speaker system. “We’ll be encountering a high-speed boat, and there will be increased water lift. Please move away from the railing immediately.” Annie’s heartbeat sprinted through her chest, and she gathered Paige and Bri closer to her. They stepped back, but the ferry already felt unsteady.
