“So Rick did come back a few years later,” Julia said, setting down a cup of coffee in front of Tessa. She sat beside her. “He and Bobbie did get married.”
“They protected him,” Tessa said. She reached for the sugar bowl, though she didn’t drink coffee. “For decades, they protected him. He got a new identity. He lived here. He had Bobbie, and while he didn’t know if Janey was his or not, he got to see her.” She stirred in a couple of spoonfuls of sugar and then poured in a healthy dose of cream.
“That’s wild,” Julia said, glancing over to Janey. “And she never said anything?”
“None of them ever said anything,” Janey said. “That generation, they know how to keep things under wraps. Viola’s the same way.”
