She put her fingers on his arm and felt herself tremble because she was touching him and because he was so near. But, when she looked up into his face, he was scowling. The other guests went ahead, Druscilla and the Marquis were last and, when they entered the great Banqueting Hall, everyone stood to receive them. The Marquis led Druscilla to the top of the table. She stood on his right and then after Grace had been said by the Parson, who had succeeded to her father’s incumbency, they were all seated. Druscilla was glad that she had Mr. Anstey on her other side, because he could point out the most important tenants and farmers and their wives and tell her a little of the history of those whom she did not know or remind her of those who had been here when she had lived in the village.
