Chapter ten - You wouldn't have been here

Kevin's POV: Lizzy found out about the pictures. Since then, I haven't received any more. Both of us agreed it would be better if she stopped doing it. I don't want to upset my daughter. It's enough that she doesn't want to see me anymore. I guess I have to stop all my relations with her. This is the last thing I want to do, but I don't have a choice. She and Nia are the only thing I have. My parents died a few years ago. Noah and Nia came to the funeral. Her parents, as well. Lizzy was at home. I have shown them pictures of her. My parents have asked me many times why I left Nia. That's why I couldn't tell them. I have to keep this secret at the price of my life. It sounds ridiculous, but it's true. The less people know about this, the better. I want to forget about Lizzy, but I can't. I made a mistake, and now I want to fix it. The problem is that she is making it too hard. I don't know what to do with her. Force won't help. Also, I will never do it to her. Will she come to me or not should be her choice. At least her mom is not mad at me. Noah and I might be friends, but this doesn't mean anything. He can't solve my problems. He should stay away from this. That way, he will save himself and won't get in trouble. I hope that my life will get easier. I woke up and went to get ready for the day. There is something called a weekend. I have no idea what it means. We work all the time. My team and I have deliveries every day. Who knew that people buy drugs so often? I'm sure most of them resell them for a higher price. That is not my business. All I have to do is to find out who the big boss is. For now, things are not going well. I have no information about him. The contacts from my boss's phone were checked. Nothing. All of them were customers. I got ready and went to work. On the way, I stopped for a cup of coffee. I had one at home, but it wasn't enough. I drink more when I know I will have a heavy day. I feel like this one will be the same. I walked into the building and saw a table full of pills. The boys weren't there. Did something happen? I checked everything. Even the boss wasn't here. I wonder what has happened. I started packing when someone tapped my shoulder. - Hey. - Oh, it's you. Hey, Dave. - Are you ok? You look worried. - No one was here. I thought something had happened. - You came early. The boys are on the way. - Good. We have a lot of work today. - Some people never sleep, you know? - I do. I guess we'll be one of them. - At least we work a few hours a day. - Yes, and then we have to work more at home. - You need to take a rest. - I will when we finish our job. - No one knows when this will happen. You need to take care of yourself. If not for yourself, do it for Lizzy. - Why? She doesn't want to see me. - So? This doesn't mean you should give up. - I didn't say I will do it. - This is exactly how it sounded to me. - You are delusional. - Me or you? - Forget it. Will you help me here? I have a lot of packs to pack. - Sure. Do we have addresses? - Everything is written on each box. It says the address and quantity of each product. - I see. We have big orders. - I won't complain about this. All I know is that I want this to be over. I didn't expect this to take us so long. - That is because no one is talking. Also, we don't know the other bosses. - They know the big one. - Yes, but they won't say his name. Neither will say how he looks. - Are we talking here? - Two people can't deliver all this alone. - Where is the rest of the team? - We are here, sir. - Nick said - What are you waiting for? You should help them. You have many deliveries today. - Do the drugs get resold? - John asked - I don't know, and I don't care. I need my money, so you better finish with this until the rest of the day. Understood? - Yes. You will have your money. - Good. We packed out all the boxes and went out. Someone has to deliver these. I took ten. Most of them were in the same area. Once, I asked a customer if he knew from where he was buying this. I received a negative answer. He had no idea about the boss. I don't think any of the customers know. For two hours, I managed to finish my tasks. Later, I went to get lunch for the boys. They will take a break and do the work later. Of course, I will help them. - Here you go. I don't want to hear complaints about the lunch. - I said, chuckling - Guys, we have to do something. We keep doing the same work every day without results. This will take years. - John said - Do you have any ideas? The one with the phone numbers failed. - No, but we have to think of something. - I agree, but we need a good strategy. - Nick said - Well, I have something in mind, but it's risky. - Dave said - What is it? - I asked - Our boss received the money at the end of the day. I'm sure not all of them are for him. He will meet the big boss to give him everything. We can follow him to see where he lives. - Great, but what if he sees us? - We won't go all of us. Since it was my idea, I can take the risk. - I can't let anything happen to you. I will go. - Are you sure? - Yes. I will pretend to go home and then follow him. - Do you think it will work? - I have to try. I will call if there are results. If nothing happens, I will text. Understood? - Yes. Good luck. Hopefully, we can understand something. - I will try my best. Let's finish our lunch and go to work. I'll help you with the deliveries. - Yes, sir. - Very funny. The boys and I finish our work on time. Later, I put my plan into action. Sadly, there was no result. Our boss went home. Maybe he knows that I'll follow him, but how? I didn't tell anyone. Something is going on here. On the way home, I saw Lizzy. She was alone. I want to talk to her, but I know what will happen. I passed by her, but something made me turn around. She was behind me. How? - Lizzy? - Are you stalking me? - What? No. - Then what are you doing here? - I'm going home. What are you doing here alone? - Nothing. I went for a walk. - What about your friend? - He is sick. It's not like you need to know. - Lizzy, you can talk to me. - I have nothing to tell you. - What is going on? You look upset. - It's not your business. We are not related. - Are you sure? - Yes. Instead of talking to me, you should apologize to my mom. - I did this a long time ago. - It's not enough. - Lizzy, I had to do it. Try to understand me. - But I can't because you never say anything. - I had to do it if I wanted to keep her safe. - Not this again. What is so important? - I can't tell you now. - Why? - Accept it. - No! - You have to do it. - I said no. - If I hadn't left your mom, you wouldn't have been here. - What? - Nothing. Go home. Your mom will be worried. - Me too. What is going on? You are hiding something from me. - No, I'm not. I have to go. - No, you will tell me the truth. What are you hiding from my mom? - Lizzy, not now. I have work to do. - You always do. I want to know the truth. - You will, but not now. Please don't ask questions. I don't have time for this. - Didn't you want us to be close? This can help. Now, start talking. - Lizzy, I won't tell you anything. Go home. Please. - Fine, but this is not the end. All I wanted was for her to talk to me. When she finally does that, it has to be about this. I would love to talk to her, but I can't. This is personal. I can't tell her about my job. Otherwise, I risk her life. I went home and prepared dinner. I can't stop thinking about her. She believes that I'm hiding something. It's true, but she wasn't supposed to know about this. Well, it's my fault. I shouldn't have told her this. Now, she won't stop asking questions. It's not like I mind, but I don't want to talk with her about this. I took a box of biscuits and went to the living room. I might watch something. I sat down and heard my phone. It was Nia. - Hello? - Hey. What happened? - What do you mean? - Lizzy told me that she has talked with you. She believes that you are hiding something from me. - I said something that I shouldn't. Please ignore it. - How can I? Kevin, what happened? - Nothing. You don't have to worry about her. - She didn't make it look this way. - Look, I don't want to talk about this. - I don't want to break this to you, but whatever goes in her head, it won't come out. - Sad, but true. - What happened? She didn't want to talk to you, and now she came. - I messed up. I already told you. - Kevin. - Nia, please. Tell her to forget about this. I won't tell her anything. She can live in peace. - I will try, but I don't think she will listen. - Thank you. - If you want, you can come to talk to her. - Thanks, but it won't be today. I need a rest. - How is your work? - Good. I do the same every day. - If it makes you happy. - It does. Do you need anything? - No, this is the only reason why I called you. She didn't say much, or at least I couldn't understand. - You can ignore it. - If you say so. Noah said he would call you tomorrow. He wants you two to go out. - I will think about this. I have some things to do. - You know he loves it. - I do. Look, I have to go now. Can we talk another day? - Sure, no problem. I'll call you tomorrow. - Thanks, and don't think about this. Take a rest. - You, too. Good night. - To you, too. That was the last thing I needed. What am I supposed to do now? Lizzy won't stop asking questions. Sadly, she is like me. Now, I wish she had been like her mom. Nia is not like that. Well, I can't change it. That's why it will be better for me to stay away. I can't keep avoiding her, but I can't tell her the truth. Not now. This will happen when the right time comes. Who knows when this will be? Lizzy needs to focus on other things. I'm not that important. This doesn't mean I don't expect her to come to me. I need to think about what I should tell her. I hope that there won't be a need for that.
