Our moment of courage was short lived. Just as the words escaped my mouth, an excruciating scream came from outside. I recognized the shrill cry immediately as Jemma's.
Without thinking, I lunged myself around Bridgit and tried to get to the door. Because of my broken leg however, I didn't make it very far. I stumbled and tripped over my own legs before Bridgit caught me and held me steady.
In a level voice, she tried to make me see sense. "Samantha, it's okay. She will be okay. You can't go out there." Bridgit's two arms held mine firmly, leaving no chance of escape.
I let out a desperate protest. "Bridgit! We can't just leave her!" I poured my desperation into my words and eyes, letting it take over. She had to know we couldn't leave Jemma out there.
