“Considering that you found Lucy and behaved so bravely in doing so,” Sir Wolfe said, “I am, of course, prepared to apologise. Will you forgive me?”
There was a note in his voice that sounded like music and Iola answered quickly,
“Yes – of course! I suppose I can – understand the – shock of knowing that she had been kidnapped made you – suspect everybody.”
“Especially you!”
“Why me?”
“Because you are quite obviously not the Nanny you pretend to be. You are too intelligent, the wrong class and, of course, far too beautiful!”
Iola’s eyes widened for a moment and then the colour swept up her face in a rosy glow.
“Much too beautiful!” Sir Wolfe repeated, “and I find it impossible to guess why, looking as you do, that you should choose to disguise yourself as you have and in my house.”
