Henry seems anxious to change the subject. He tells her to come back any time she feels the need. The dinner party goes off well. E. and Stephen behave themselves, and E. even reproves pup for trying to embarrass Henry with some talk of training. She can’t help teasing him, but she only ever teases people she likes, and he does seem a very nice man. Just before he leaves, Stephen takes E. on one side and speaks to him. After the guests have gone, pup asks what they were talking about. ‘The two guys at the party who assaulted you?’ ‘Yes?’ ‘Measures have been taken.’ ‘What measures?’ ‘You don’t need to know that.
