6: Tangier FELLS poured himself out a second cup of tea, put the Bystander on the table beside the tea-things, went to the window and looked out. It was half-past four. Soon it would be dark. A wind was blowing. Fells thought it would probably be a nasty night. He drew the black-out curtains, switched on the electric fire, went back to his chair. He picked up an illustrated paper, began to turn over the pages, reading the captions under the pictures. The pictures were graphic. They showed the landings of the Americans in Tunisia, pictures of the Eighth Army and the First Army. Fells lit a cigarette. Every time he looked at a picture which showed soldiers in action his heart beat a little faster. Waves of regret surged through him. He should have been there, he thought. He saw himself wi
