Well, there it was. What the hell! Greeley began to ask himself why he was thinking so much about Zilla Stevenson, and what she did or did not do in connection with Foden. Then, quite suddenly, he realised that he'd fallen for her. He sat looking at the flickering screen in front of him, his cigarette hanging precariously from the corner of his mouth. He said to himself: "Well, I'll be sugared! So I've fallen in love, have I? Well, I'll be damned!"
The thought not only amazed him but it also amused him. He sat there grinning in the darkness, considering the implications of falling for somebody—of being stuck on a woman so that it really mattered. So he was in love! Hear him laugh.
