Bryant pov “You can't reject her, son. She has done nothing wrong,” my father said as soon as I entered my study again. “I will reject her. She is a servant girl and I have a fiancé in case you haven't forgotten about that father,” “Who? Anna?” He scoffed. “I've told you, son, she's no good for you. She can't be a proper Luna, she's too preoccupied with her career for moon sakes!” I glared at my father. This was how it always was whenever we talked about Anna. He didn't hate her. In fact, he liked her, but he just didn't want her as my Luna, and it irritated me. Anna had been nothing but loving towards him even with her busy schedule, but he was still obsessed with this fated mate nonsense. She was the love of my life, and I would do anything for her, including rejecting my fated mate. After all, we'd made a pact that we would both reject our mate whenever we met them, and that was exactly what I planned on doing: reject my mate. “I'm rejecting the servant girl as my mate, Dad. It is not a debate or a request. It is what I plan on doing,” I said, my voice carrying finality. “I don't think that's a good idea. Do you have any idea how many Alpha’s have fallen into a s**t storm simply because they rejected their mate?” I rolled my eyes at my father. “Not this again,” I groaned out. The man was so superstitious sometimes, it was always a wonder to me why he hadn't just become a seer instead. “I'm only telling you the truth. So many of them I know either went completely bankrupt or got killed,” my father said, his gaze softening. I sighed. “I appreciate your concern for me, Father, but I don't need your truth, Dad. Besides, I'm doing her a favor. She won't last here with Lucy.” I said, not bothering to explain. “Fine, if you are not going to accept her as your mate. At least don't fire her. She needs this job.” I wanted to ask what he meant by that but decided I didn't care much about it. My father had always been obsessed with charity, even towards people that didn't deserve it. “You can at least do that much, can't you?” My father pressed. “I will think about it,” I said after a pause and exited my study. I needed to shower and wash off the stink of the last couple of days. I entered my room, and it was spotlessly clean and smelled of strawberries and something else… the servant girl. Her scent was here, and it made me angry at how intoxicating it was. My phone rang, and I fished out the phone from my bag. It was Anna. I sighed in relief, glad to hear from her, especially since I was just about to call her. “Darling,” her sweet voice spoke as soon as I picked up. “Hello, Sweetheart. Yes, I am back home and yes, I'll be having dinner soon.” I answered her unspoken questions before she could ask. “That's great to know, darling. How is your father and the entire packhouse?” “Great," I answered, contemplating whether or not to tell her about the servant girl. “Are you sure? Is there something you aren't telling me?” She asked. Anna was always incredibly observant… “There is a little situation,” “What is it?" She asked. “I think we should move our wedding back a bit. Maybe you can take a break on this project of yours and we can get married sooner.” “I don't understand. Why the sudden change of plans? You told me you were fine with this.” she sounded agitated as she spoke. “I am, but I just think we should both prioritize our relationships now.” There was a long pause at the other end of the line, and I could almost hear Anna calculating her response. That’s what she did, she always thought before she spoke, carefully weighing every word. It was part of what I admired about her, but at that moment, her silence irritated me. “Bryant,” she finally said, her tone measured, “we’ve already talked about this. My career is important to me, just like your role as Alpha is important to you. I don’t understand why this sudden urgency to change our plans. Is there something else going on?” I pinched the bridge of my nose, leaning back against the wall of my room. Her logical tone was making it harder for me to explain my feelings. How could I tell her about Kiara without making it sound like I was betraying her trust? Anna wasn’t insecure, but she was practical and practicality wouldn’t excuse the complications of me being fated to someone else, a servant girl no less. “There’s nothing wrong, Anna,” I said finally, trying to keep my voice steady–which was odd because I never really had to try. “I just miss you, that’s all. It’s been months since we’ve had real time together, and I don’t want to keep waiting.” She sighed, her voice softening slightly. “I miss you too, Bryant. You know that. But this project is crucial for my future. You promised you understood that. Can’t we just stick to the plan? Six months isn’t that far away.” Six months. A lifetime in my current state. The thought of enduring even one more day around Kiara's intoxicating scent while trying to suppress the bond was maddening. I clenched my jaw, pacing the length of the room as I considered my response. “I do understand,” I said finally, though the words tasted bitter. “But sometimes, I wonder if we’re putting too much on hold for the future and forgetting to live in the present.” “Bryant…” Anna's voice was gentle now, almost apologetic. “I know this is hard. But we’ve waited this long, we can wait a little longer. I promise, once this project is finished, I’ll be all yours.” The conviction in her tone made me feel guilty for pushing her. Anna had never given me a reason to doubt her love or commitment, and here I was, letting my frustration and unresolved feelings about Kiara cloud my judgment. “Okay,” I said quietly. “We’ll stick to the plan.” “Thank you,” she said with a small laugh of relief. “You know I love you, right?” “I do,” I replied, my voice softer now. “And I love you too.” After we ended the call, I sank onto the edge of the bed, running a hand through my hair. Anna was right. She always was, but that didn’t make this situation any easier. My wolf stirred restlessly inside me, clearly displeased with the direction this was going. “You’re doing the right thing,” I muttered to myself, trying to silence the gnawing sense of unease. “You’re choosing love over fate. That’s what matters.” But as I stood and moved toward the shower, Kiara's scent lingered in the air, refusing to let me forget. I needed to get rid of her. I couldn't let her stench keep me from the woman I truly loved… Anna.
