Chapter 4

Kiara pov I ignored the tears that spilled from my eyes as Bryant fired me, but I didn't fail to look him in the eyes that I'm his mate and didn't deserve all this. He's an Alpha and I believe he knows the importance of mates, not just for himself alone, but for the pack. “Well, what are you waiting for? A red carpet rolled out for you? Leave the packhouse. Your services are no longer needed! “ “But, Alpha. I don't understand, I didn't do anything,” “You dare question me?” He growled, his eyes darkening as they glared directly at me. I stared at Alpha Bryant, my vision blurred with tears. His words echoed in my ears, each one cutting deeper than the last. I couldn't believe this was happening. I had done nothing wrong—except maybe exist in his presence. “But, Alpha…” I tried again, my voice trembling. “Please, I need this job. My mother—” “I don’t care about your excuses,” he interrupted coldly, his gaze hard and unrelenting. “You’re no longer welcome here. Leave and I don't want to ever see you again!” The finality in his tone left no room for argument. My hands trembled as I wiped at my tears, trying to muster the last shred of dignity I had left. I gave a small, shaky bow and whispered, “Yes, Alpha,” before turning to leave. The packhouse felt suffocating as I made my way to the small room I had been assigned. I threw what little I owned into a battered bag, my heart heavy with despair. This job had been my last hope—my lifeline. Without it, how could I pay for my mother’s treatment? The other maids whispered behind my back as I made my way out, their judgmental gazes burning into me. Lucy didn’t bother hiding her smug smile as she crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe. “Told you you wouldn’t last a day,” she sneered. I didn’t respond. There was no point. Words can’t fix this. Holding my head high, I walked past her, focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. The chilly evening air hit me as I stepped outside, the reality of my situation sinking in. I was homeless, jobless, and completely lost. If only I wasn't mated to him, I would have been living a simple life as a maid in the pack house. --- The walk back to my mother’s small cottage felt longer than usual. My mind raced with thoughts of how I could fix this. Maybe another pack needed help? Maybe there was a human job in the nearby town? My desperation grew with every step, but no solutions came to mind. When I finally reached the door, I hesitated. I didn’t want my mother to see me like this. She was already fighting her own battle—one I was supposed to help her win. Swallowing my emotions, I pushed the door open. “Kiara?” My mother’s weak voice came from the small bed in the corner. She tried to sit up, her frail form trembling with the effort. “I’m home, Mama,” I said, forcing a smile as I rushed to her side. “You should be resting.” She gave me a tired smile, but her eyes were full of concern. “Why are you back so soon? Did something happen?” I hesitated, not wanting to burden her with the truth. “The Alpha decided he didn’t need me anymore,” I said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “But it’s okay. I’ll find something else.” Her face fell. “Oh, Kiara… I’m so sorry.” “Don’t be,” I said quickly, taking her hand. “We’ll figure this out. Together.” Her silence spoke volumes, and my heart sank further. She didn’t believe me, and honestly, I didn’t believe myself. --- Later that evening, I sat by the small table, going through the pile of medical bills we couldn’t pay. The numbers blurred before my eyes, and I let out a frustrated sigh. No matter how many times I calculated, there was no way we could afford the treatment she needed. “Kiara,” my mother called weakly from her bed. I rushed to her side. “What is it, Mama? Do you need something?” She shook her head, her frail hand gripping mine. “I don’t want you to worry about me.” “How can I not worry?” I asked, my voice cracking. “You’re all I have.” She smiled faintly, her eyes filled with a sadness that broke my heart. “You’ve already done so much for me. It’s okay to let go, Kiara.” “No!” I said, shaking my head vehemently. “Don’t say that. You’re going to get better. I’ll find a way. I promise.” Tears streamed down my face as I clutched her hand. She didn’t respond, her eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion took over. I sat by her side, silently crying as the weight of reality crushed me. The next morning, I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing. My heart sank as I picked it up, half-expecting another bill collector or a rejection from the jobs I had hastily applied to the night before. But the caller ID made me freeze. It was the packhouse. Confused, I hesitated for a moment before answering. “Hello?” “Kiara,” a deep voice said. It took me a second to recognize it, but when I did, my breath hitched. It was Alpha Bryant. “A-Alpha?” I stammered, my heart pounding. “I need you to return to the packhouse immediately,” he said, his tone clipped and commanding. I blinked in disbelief. “But… you fired me.” “I’ve changed my mind,” he said, his voice brooking no argument. “You’re needed here. Pack your things and return now!” Before I could respond, the line went dead. I stared at the phone in shock, my mind racing. What could possibly have changed his mind? And why now? I glanced at my mother, still sleeping peacefully. Whatever the reason, this was an opportunity I couldn’t afford to pass up and I couldn't afford to mess up again.
