“It is very pretty,” Donela conceded as Kitty did her up at the back, “but it really is very – low in the front and I feel – embarrassed.”
“Nothing like that bothers Milly!” Kitty said. “Still, I tell you what I’ll do. We’ll take a rose off the back of the gown and pin it at the front where you think it’s low. But don’t tell Basil! He don’t like us messin’ about with the dresses.”
She cut off a rose as she had said she would.
Donela managed to pull the sides of the gown together and join them with a safety pin and the rose certainly made her feel more decent.
Yet she still seemed to be showing an enormous amount of naked shoulder and chest.
‘Perhaps they will not notice me,’ she thought, ‘and, as I am singing A Voice in the Dark, they ought to turn down the lights, if that’s possible.
