CHAPTER FOURWhen Kitty and Daisy finished their dance, there was loud applause.
One or two of the diners shouted ‘Bravo!’
They came hurrying off the stage and Kitty said in a whisper to Donela,
“You’ll be next after Basil’s finished and don’t be nervous.”
Donela went to the entrance and all she could see from there was the stage itself with its colourful plants.
Basil Banks was telling a story that provoked a roar of laughter.
He went into a song that apparently they all knew. One or two of the gentlemen joined in the chorus.
When it came to an end he said,
“And now, ladies and gentlemen, one of my most beautiful Belles will sing for you and I feel sure you’ll find her irresistible.”
He made a sound on the piano like a roll of drums.
