The team stood in the aisle of the big jet as they were about to deplane. Whitey stood in front of them and delivered a pep talk on how they were to behave for the fans and press “We’ve turned a corner. We’re on the brink of a good, maybe great, season and we need to carry ourselves with the dignity required of a successful ballclub.” Fan support and respect were important to Whitey. While some on the team felt he went a bit overboard with his old-fashioned ethics and morality, no one could question his successful résumé as a player or manager.
