Chapter 8

2004 Words
"Huh?! Anong ako?!" Hindi makapaniwalang sabi ni Jerold kay Tiffany. "Eh ano pa man?!" "Hello class. Are you ready for your thesis?" "Yes Mrs. Vera" "Okay ,then let's start early , I have somewhere to go." "Yes Mrs. Vera" "Shall we start shuffling your index card?" tinaasan kami ni Mrs. Vera ng kilay niya na parang na aamuse sa aming reaction sa kanya . Aghh... I reallh hate when they shuffle our index card, kakaiba talaga ang feeling kapag ikaw yung tinawang, noh? Okay kapag ikaw yung last or middle, pero mas okay na okay kapag ikaw yung una kesa hindi kase grabe yung kaba mo beh. "Group 2" ' Ah sht. ' "Yes Mrs. Vera "Tumayo kaming lahat mag- grupong sa subject ni Mrs. Vera "Are you ready?" "Okay...Start your thesis now" inayos ni Mrs. Vera ang kaniyang salamin. "First what's your topic again?" "What are the origins of a chosen book" Sabi naming lahat na nanginginig ang aming kamay pero hindi pinakita. "Before we start , we just wanted to let you know that we choose Jurassic Park as chosen novel to be part of our statement for today." "Okay." Tumango si Mrs. Vera. "In the statement :" In Jurassic Park, Crichton seems to warn us chillingly that, in bioengineering as in chaos theory, the moment we most appear to be in control of events is the exact moment control is already irredeemably lost to us." I started. "For what purpose did the author write this, and did he fulfill that purpose?" "What did the main character learn? Does this lesson reflect reality as you know it?" Sunod-sunud ko sinabi. "Were the characters complex and believable? What do they reveal of the author? of human nature?" "How well did the setting contribute to the mood? How did setting affect character and plot development?" Isa- isa namin sinagot ang mga tanugan na sinabi namin tungkol sa thesis namin ngayon. "Author's purpose. No one goes to the trouble to write something without purpose. Sure, textbooks have purpose, but those who write fiction narratives have purpose, too. Even fantasy writers have purpose. A book report should include your evaluation of whether the author succeeded in his purpose." Nagsalita si Harold pagkatapos ko. "The writer has made a statement about the author's purpose: Crichton seems not so much to be warning us of the evils of scientific inquiry as begging us, in a very convincing way, to exercise collective moral restraint on scientific research." "This writer would then go on to use quotations, examples, and evidence from the book to show why she believes this is Crichton's purpose." "To identify and respond to the purpose of an author. Here are the following questions. " Jerome started another questions. "Was the author's purpose to inform or simply entertain me? Did I learn something? Was I entertained? Did I lose interest? If I lost interest, was this author, perhaps, writing to a different audience?" "Is the author trying to persuade me to think or act in a particular way? About what issue? What point of view would he or she have me adopt? Was I convinced?" And again we answered all the questions that we given. Pagkatapos non ay si Jerold naman ang sumunod . "Now. Author's ideas ." "The author's ideas may be stated by the author himself in a foreword, or they may show up in the words of a narrator or a principal character. The character Ian Malcolm, for example, is a primary spokesman for Crichton's criticism of post-modern science. Malcolm's words, express one of the ideas Crichton wishes us to consider: "I'll tell you the problem with engineers and scientists.... They are focused on whether they can do something. They never stop to ask if they should do something." "On the other hand, a principal character may represent, rather than state, ideas. Hammond's visiting grandchildren, for example, might represent the oblivious, yet threatened, human populations of the mainland and the planet itself. When ideas are implied rather than stated, they are called themes." "To discover and evaluate ideas in a book." "What was the central problem in the book? Was it a personal, social, or moral problem? Does it relate to life as you know it?" "What ideas about life and society does the author seem to hold?" "What did the principal characters learn? How did they change? What does this seem to say about people? About society? About morality" "Author's attitudes. An author's attitudes are revealed in part by the tone, or overall mood, of the work. In writing, as in conversation, tone is not so much stated as implied. In reading we depend solely on the emotional overtones of the words to infer the attitudes of the author." And lastly si Tiffany na naman. "For example, suppose you have determined that Crichton wishes to explore the idea of how private industry exploits scientific research. You must then determine, as well, what Crichton's attitude is toward this situation. Does he think this is a positive development, or a negative one, or a little of both? Does he think it is inevitable, or preventable? One way to figure out Crichton's attitude about this is to identify the tone he uses to tell the story. We describe the tone of a book with adjectives, and more than one if necessary: straightforward, complex, ironic, creepy, pathetic, bitter, comic, tragic. For example, here is a statement using three different adjectives to describe Crichton's attitude toward one of the central problems in Jurassic Park" "Crichton strikes an ominous tone in Jurassic Park. Even though this is a cautionary tale, the author nevertheless is optimistic that the mainstream scientific community, represented in this story by Alan Grant, can learn restraint and respect for nature." "When identifying the tone of a book, make the effort to distinguish an individual character's attitude from the author's overall attitude-they may differ." Sabi ko pagkatapos sa explanation ni Tiffany. "Is there a particular setting or scene that stands out in my mind? What was the mood of that scene? Is this mood indicative of entire book?" "Is the author an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist? How does he show it?" "Does a principal character experience one persistent state of mind or emotion? What would I call it? Is it indicative of the work overall " "Did the mood of the work help or hinder my understanding of the Author's ideas?" Then we started our defense when Mrs. Vera questioned us. Few minutes later , we are almost to finish our thesis. "In conclusion... Clearly it is important to be able to make intelligent inferences about the author, because a book evaluation evaluates how well the author has done her job, not just how much you liked the story. "I really, really liked it." Tiffany then finished off our statement. "Very good. Well performed. I'm very impress even though all your hands are shaking" "I can see that , I'm your teacher. Can't lie right?" "Yeah "we chuckled . "Your thesis . Defend " "YES!" Malawak ang aming ngiti habang tumatalod na parang palaka. Okay, group 1 , 3 , 4 and 5, be prepared for tomorrow, you never know that it's your turn na. Okay? "Yes Mrs. Vera" sabi ng mga ibang gropu na parang anytime soon ma cocollapse sila sa sinabi ni Mrs. Vera. "Okay goodbye everyone, and have a nice day." Lumakad na paalis si Mrs. Vera. Mall "San ka mag bibirthday, ley?" Yanna bend her head. Nasa favorite cafe kami ngayon , yung cafe na meron gazebo sa likod . Favorite na favorite ko itong café eh. Sa amin magkaibigan , ako lang at si shane lang ang nakadiskubre nito , ako yung una at tsaka siya . "Oo nga at tsaka anong theme mo, ley?" Samantha asked while crossing her legs. "Well...I want my birthday at my mansion , and my theme is going to be golden luxury? Or somewhat close to them? Have a golden party also , like where people dress something similar to gold or luxury, and oh I also want a pool party on my birthday. " "Ay grabe naman to oh!" Natalie. "Well not expected from a rich spoil girl with a rich spoiler parents ." Via smirk and Hailey smirked back. Yanna and Samantha smirk looking at them. Natalie coughed jokely and shane chuckled . " Is there anything that you want to make your guess wear in your birthday? " Natalie. "Well...Guess should be wearing silk clothes while boys must wear formal clothes for the golden party and that's going to happen in night and for pool party ofcourse, everyone must wear bikini or their swim wear. " "Oh wow" Samantha raised her both eyebrows bago siya uminom ng kape . "Does anybody against? " "No, maam" we chuckled. "Nag ask lang ako ha? Wag kayo magiisip na nagagalit ako ." She pouted. "Okay naman din pero si..." Lumingon silang lahat sa akin "What?" "Are you okay with it?" Samantha. "Are you agree with it?" Via. "Oo naman" "But you never like to reveal your body? " Itinaas ni Yanna ang kaliwang kilay. "Well , yes , that's true pero tinetry ko naman na masanay ako eh." "Pero hindi talaga ako sanay sa silk" "Bakit? Dahil ba at any moment pwede makita yung balat mo at mga parte na hindi mo gusto makita sa mga lalaki?" Via. "Oo at-" "At smooth siya so pwede sa lalaki ma easy access and easy touch through cloth lang?" Hailey. "Yes." They sigh ,then chuckled. "Well kailangan mo talaga masanay!" Maingay sabi ni Samantha. "Oo nga at tsaka fashion naman yun eh" tumawa mahina si Shane sa kin. "Wala naman ako talaga pakialaman sa fashion ang gusto ko lang suotin is yung mga komportable suotin ko." "Well that's what I want!" "At alam ko naman Hailey bakit yan ang gusto mong theme" "Bakit ?" "No.1 , You love fashion , No.2 , Your favorite type of cloth is silk , No.3 , You love parties. Lastly , No. 4 , You want me seeing in a silk cloth type of dress." Tumawa lumakas si Hailey "Tsaka gusto mo din noh na makita akong na nagbibikini? Dahil hindi mo pa ako nakikita ." "Well Yes! I won't deny , that's the truth."
