Episode 1
"Surely what I'm asking you to do isn't difficult, right? So do it now so you can get out of my sight," he said to me seriously.
I didn't know how to feel about what he was doing to me. He ordered me to put roses on the bed, while the woman beside him was smirking at me. I bowed my head and just did what he ordered so I could leave the room. When I was done, I walked out without a word, but I stopped when I felt him pull my hair. I felt the pain because of what he did.
"Next time I order you to do something, do it properly," he said sternly to me and pushed me out the door, then closed it. I couldn't hold back the tears in my eyes anymore. I didn't know why we ended up like this; just the other day he was so sweet to me and telling me how much he loved me. But now everything has suddenly changed. It was as if he was enslaving me for a reason I didn't know. What should I do, when I don't know how to break free from the prison he has given me.
"Kaila, it's been two months since you paid rent, you know I also need money to pay my children's tuition.."
"Dina, I'm really sorry, our youngest got sick so we used the money. That was also Ricky's last salary, so I can't promise if I can pay you now."
I sighed when I heard what my mother said to Aunt Dina; the owner of the house we were renting. I was going down the stairs when I heard their conversation and now I'm here looking at them. I saw Aling Dina's reaction to what my mother said. She looked disappointed and seemed to not like what Mama said. She's kind and a friend of Mama. But, when it comes to house rent and money, her attitude really changed.
"Oh dear, Kayla, you also know that I need the money. Maybe you can find a way to pay me now," she said to my mother, shaking her head.
I sighed again and walked closer to them. Before Mama could speak, I spoke.
"I'll pay, Aunt Dina," I said to her and turned to Mama, then I smiled at her.
I saw the surprise on her face because of what I said. I turned to Aling Dina again and saw that her gaze at us seemed to have been enlivened. I smiled at her and took something from the bag I was carrying. I took out the amount of money I would pay her, then I gave it to her.
"Here you go, and we'll also advance one month," I said to her with a smile.
She immediately accepted the money and thanked me.
"Oh! It's a good thing Khez is kind. Okay? I'll go ahead so I can catch Dylan's tuition," she said and said goodbye to us as she left.
Once she was out of the house, I felt Mama hold my hand. So I looked at her.
"Where did that money come from, Khezyne?" Mama asked me, frowning.
"That's my one week's salary from the coffee shop I work at near our school," I said to her with a smile.
She frowned even more at what I said, and I understand why she's reacting like this. Oh right, I'm Khezyene Emarie Mendez; 20 years old and a 4th year college student. Life is simple and we get by when we're diligent in our daily tasks. I'm the eldest of three siblings, and my two younger brothers are still in high school. Actually, Mama doesn't know what I'm doing, especially about my job at the coffee shop.
"You're working? What about your studies? You might be neglecting them because of your job. You know we're working hard so you can study and graduate, so you can send your siblings to school when you have a good job. Khezyene!" she said and suddenly stood up in front of me.
I just scratched my cheek, while avoiding looking at her.
"I can endure anything, Khez, you know that! You are my hope for your siblings!"
"Kai? Why are you so noisy? What am I hearing?"
I looked at the person who suddenly entered the door and saw Papa carrying a jar of water. He put it down and looked at Mama and me with a puzzled expression.
"Your daughter, it turns out, she's already working without us knowing," Mama said to Papa.
So Papa looked at me. I gave him an awkward smile.
"Is that true?" he said to me, frowning.
"Okay, just relax you two. Yes, I'm working, but it doesn't mean...that I'm neglecting my studies. I'm working part-time to help you. So I hope you don't take my desire to help the wrong way. I have a lot of time to study, but I want to help you too. So, I hope you'll allow me my way of doing things, please?" I explained to both of them.
They didn't say anything and glanced at each other slightly. I kept looking back and forth at them, and after a while, I heard Mama sigh and she approached me.
"Okay, but are you sure about what you're going to do? You might have a hard time and your body might not be able to handle it," she said to me worriedly.
I just smiled at her.
"Don't worry, Ma, Pa, I can handle everything for this family," I said to them with a smile.
I saw them both smile at me and suddenly they hugged me.
"You really, take care of yourself, huh?" Mama reminded me.
I nodded and broke away from her embrace. I took my wallet and took out some money from it. I only left a little for what I'm going to do today.
"Here, Ma, you take care of that. I have work today because it's Saturday, so I might get home late," I told them.
I said goodbye to them both and they let me leave. When I had completely left the house, my smile gradually disappeared.
Yeah, it's true that I work at a coffee shop, but I resigned yesterday because of the male customers who were there almost every day and were making fun of me. They would grope me and repeatedly order me to their table. So I get annoyed with what they do to me every day. I told our manager about it, but it seemed like he was taking the side of those men more... so I just decided to quit rather than have those crazy guys keep making fun of me.
So now, I need to find a new job because I promised Mama that I would help them. I really didn't plan to tell them about my job, but I got cornered and I especially can't tell them that I resigned and tell them the reason, Papa might suddenly look for those men.
He doesn't even want anyone courting me or any men hanging around, what more if I was groped? Papa might even kill someone, so I didn't tell him that.
I just sighed and hailed a taxi. I was also meeting my friend and she's going to help me find a new job.
I arrived at the mall, where my friend Kristen was waiting for me. She said she was just in the lobby of the mall, at the entrance. So when I entered, I immediately saw her.
"Hello, Friend! You really always make me wait, huh?" she said and rolled her eyes slightly.
"Oh, I'm sorry... there was traffic. By the way, I'm thirsty, treat me. You know I just resigned," I said to her and hugged her arm.
"Asus! I knew you were going to say that. Come on, let's go there," she said and immediately pulled me towards the place she was talking about.
We went into a fast food chain. Oh right, she's Kristen Aguilla. She's my classmate and best friend since we were freshmen. I never thought I would be friends with this one, because besides being beautiful, rich, and smart, she's also kind to me. She's snobbish to others, but not to me.
"So, what jobs can you recommend to me, anything..."
She smirked.
"You know, there are really a lot of jobs that fit you. The only problem is the time, because you study in the morning. Your only time is at night, but it's still not sure if your schedule can handle it," she said to me.
I sighed.
"You know, I really need to get a job now. They're expecting me now, especially since Papa lost his job. So whatever job that is, I'll take it, just to help my family," I said to her seriously.
She didn't say anything and stared at me slightly. It was as if she was examining my whole being and after a while, she shook her head.
"What?" I said.
She scratched her forehead.
"You know, you're my friend. I can lend you money or I can take care of your finances. Just don't work," she said.
I avoided looking at her.
"You know I don't want that. I want to work hard for the money I get, I don't like that idea of yours. You know that, right?" I said softly and sighed at her.
She didn't say anything. After a while, our order arrived, but no one was moving. I was still waiting for her answer.
"Fine. I know that, but it's too risky if I suggest this to you," she said hesitantly.
I just smiled.
"I can handle anything, whatever it is," I said to her decisively.
She sighed and moved slightly closer to me.
"Okay, this one is risky but, if you get lucky—you will have thousands every hour," she said and smirked slightly.
I stopped at what she said and seemed to want to know what kind of job she was going to tell me about.
"What is it?"
"I heard from my mom that a friend of hers is looking for people our age who have perfect bodies, as if they look like models. If you apply and get the standard they're looking for, you'll be accepted immediately. Only, there are two jobs that could be your job if ever. Either, you will become their model or a lady-in-waiting. Actually, everything isn't detailed, we'll only know when we talk to Mommy's friend," she explained to me.
I thought about what she said. I didn't know if I should take the job she was talking about, even though we didn't know if it would be good for me. But, I still had in mind to find a job because I needed one.
"How can we talk to that friend of your Mommy that you're talking about?" I asked her.
"I'll take care of it, we'll go to Mommy's friend today. I know her anyway," she said to me with a smile.
I nodded. After a while, we started eating and we talked a lot, especially about my former job. Even she was annoyed with those men, because she had once witnessed how those men treated me. She just didn't act to stop them, because if she confronted them, I might get fired from the job. It's just that, I voluntarily resigned.
I frowned while looking outside an establishment, where Kristen and I were standing. It was still closed, but I knew what was in this place and I couldn't be wrong! It's a well-known club here in our. I looked at Kristen.
"A-Are you sure this is the place of your Mommy's friend?" I asked her.
"Yes, and I know what you're thinking right now. To tell you, that's not going to be your job. So, let's go," she answered me and invited me in.
She knocked lightly on the closed door. After a while, it opened and a man peeked out. He looked at both of us and I could see that he seemed amazed looking at Kristen and me.
"Ahem! Mrs. Laura is expecting us, I'm Kristen—her guest," Kristen said to him.
He looked us up and down again before fully opening the door and letting us in.
"Follow me," he said.
So Kristen and I followed him. As we walked inside, I felt nervous. Kristen wouldn't sell me, would she? She's my close friend so she wouldn't fool me. The club where we are is a place where there are many paid women, like prostitutes. I've passed by here once, especially at night, and I really see the women coming out of here with men.
I swallowed. Of all the jobs I don't want, it's this kind. If this is what Kristen will give me, never mind, hays!
