Chapter 1:
The rain started just after midnight. It tapped softly against the small windows of the house, a lonely rhythm that echoed through the empty rooms. The lights were dim, the air heavy with silence. Maria sat on the edge of the bed, her hands resting on her swollen belly. Eight months pregnant, exhausted, and alone. Again. She glanced at the clock hanging on the wall. 12:47 AM. Daniel still wasn’t home. Maria sighed and slowly stood up, one hand supporting her back. The baby moved inside her, a small kick that made her smile despite everything. “Are you waiting for Papa too?” she whispered gently, rubbing her belly. The baby kicked again. Maria’s smile faded. Daniel used to come home early during the first months of their marriage. He used to ask if she had eaten, if she was tired, if she needed anything. But those moments slowly disappeared like smoke drifting into the air. Now he barely spoke to her. Sometimes Maria wondered if he regretted marrying her. But when she found out she was pregnant, hope returned to her heart. She believed the baby would change things. That Daniel would finally look at her the way a husband should. But nothing changed. He stayed distant. Cold. Unreachable. A sudden pain shot through Maria’s abdomen. She gasped. Her hand gripped the edge of the table. “Ah—” Another wave came, stronger this time. Her breathing became uneven. “No… it’s too early,” she whispered. Her hands trembled as she reached for her phone on the table. Daniel’s number. She pressed call. The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. No answer. Maria bit her lip, tears forming in her eyes as another painful contraction twisted through her body. “Daniel… please…” She tried again. Still nothing. The rain outside grew heavier, pounding against the roof as if the sky itself was crying with her. Maria slowly lowered herself to the floor, clutching her belly. The pain became unbearable. Hours seemed to pass inside that silent house. There were no nurses. No doctors. No comforting voices. Just Maria. And the child she refused to give up on. Sweat soaked her hair as she pushed through the pain, whispering soft encouragements to herself between gasps. “You can do this… Maria…” “Your baby needs you…” Finally, with the last of her strength, she pushed. A small cry suddenly broke the silence. A baby. Her baby. Maria collapsed against the wall, shaking as she carefully lifted the tiny body into her arms. The infant’s cries were weak but alive. Tears streamed down Maria’s face as she held the baby close to her chest. “You’re here…” she whispered, her voice barely audible. The baby’s tiny fingers curled against her skin. Maria kissed the child’s forehead, her lips trembling. “My love… Mama is here.” But Maria felt something was wrong. Her body felt colder. Her breathing became shallow. Blood stained the floor beneath her, slowly spreading like a dark shadow. Maria hugged the baby tighter, using the last of her strength to keep the tiny body warm. “I’m sorry…” she murmured softly. “I wanted to stay longer…” The baby cried louder, searching for warmth. Maria closed her eyes slowly. Her arms never loosened. Outside, the rain continued to fall. Minutes later, the distant sound of sirens cut through the night. A neighbor had heard the baby crying and called for help. The rescuers forced the door open. What they saw froze them in place. Maria sat against the wall, pale and motionless, her arms still wrapped protectively around the newborn child crying in her embrace. She had died holding the only person she truly loved. And the only one who would ever know how much she sacrificed. Because Maria’s love remained… even after her final breath.
