Chapter 1
*7 DAYS*
The red numbers on my alarm clock blinked: *11:47 PM.*
7 days. That's all I have left before I leave this town.
"Elara, are you even listening?"
I looked up. Marco was standing by my closet, holding the two suitcases we bought last month. The ones for our future.
"Yeah," I said quickly. "Sorry. Just tired."
He smiled — that safe, familiar smile I've known for four years. He walked over and kissed my forehead.
"After next week, no more deadlines, no more alarm clocks. Just you and me in Canada."
I nodded, but my chest felt tight.
Because my alarm wasn't set for Canada. It was set for midnight. For him.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
May kumakatok sa labas. Nagkatinginan kaming dalawa ni Marco.
Marco frowned. "Who would be here at this hour?"
My heart stopped.
I knew that knock.
When Marco opened the door, he was there — wet from the rain, black shirt clinging to him, eyes dark.
Marco's best friend. Marco's ex-best friend. The man who disappeared two years ago without any goodbye.
And the man I spent one night with three days ago — a night I swore would never happen again.
"Elara," Jayden said, his eyes not leaving mine. "We need to talk."
The clock blinked again: *11:59 PM.*
Time's up.
"Jayden?"
Marco's voice was shocked. Happy. Confused — all at once.
"What the hell, man! It's been two years!"
He pulled Jayden into a hug. Jayden hugged him back, but his eyes were on me. Over Marco's shoulder, those dark eyes were asking me a single question:
"Did you tell him?"
I shook my head — so small that only he could see.
No. I didn't tell him. I couldn't.
Three nights ago, Marco was on night shift. I was alone. It was raining, just like tonight. And Jayden showed up at my apartment, saying he just got back to town and needed a place to stay for one night because his old house was flooded.
One night. That's all it was supposed to be.
But one night turned into one conversation. One conversation turned into one look that lasted too long. And one look turned into a mistake I can still feel on my skin.
"You should have called me," Marco was saying, punching Jayden's shoulder. "We thought you were never coming back!"
"I had to fix some things," Jayden said, finally looking away from me. "But I'm back now. For good."
For good. Two words that made my stomach drop.
Marco turned to me, beaming. "Elara, look! My best man is back! Now you have no reason to be sad about leaving. We can all celebrate before we go!"
He had no idea. He was celebrating a reunion while I was trying to survive it.
"I'm gonna get drinks," Marco said, walking to the kitchen. "You two catch up!"
And then we were alone.
The silence was loud. The alarm clock was still ticking.
Jayden stepped closer. Not too close. Just enough for me to smell the rain on him.
"You didn't tell him," he whispered.
"Of course I didn't tell him," I whispered back, my voice shaking. "Are you crazy? We're leaving in 7 days!"
"Are you?" he asked.
"What do you mean 'are you'?"
"Are you really leaving, Elara?"
Before I could answer, Marco's voice came from the kitchen:
"Babe! Where are the glasses?"
Jayden didn't move. He just slid a small folded paper onto my table — a receipt with a number written on the back.
"Text me," he said. "We didn't finish our conversation that night."
I stared at the paper like it was poison.
Marco came back with three glasses.
"To us!" he cheered. "To old friends and new beginnings!"
We raised our glasses. I drank, but I couldn't taste anything.
Because under the table, my hand was holding that piece of paper so tightly my knuckles turned white.
*11:59 PM turned to 12:00 AM.*
My deadline had officially started.
Marco, Me and Jayden---
I was shaking. My body was shaking, when he move him into my seat.
"Oh, Elara. Your so damn hot." ungol ni Jayden at talagang pinarinig pa niya sa akin. And he started to push and pull.
"Babe, please come here." utos nito.
Plok!
That sounds, the very familiar to me.
