Prologue
FOURTEEN YEARS AGO
"Y-You! I can't believe I raised an idiotic son like you!" Mr. Davino shouted at his son, furious. He glared at Oliver who was hiding behind Ethan.
Oliver couldn't stop his body from trembling. He couldn't believe he was being cornered by someone other than his father.
"You!" Oliver flinched when Mr. Davino pointed at him and shouted.
"Dad! It was all on me! I seduce him! Oliver didn't do anything wrong!"
"You! I was being kind to you because my wife wanted me to. She said you were being bullied for being gay. See, now? Why is your kind being hated? You even made my son into your kind?"
"Dad—"
" I want you to leave this town and don't you dare show your face here again! I will do anything in my power so that you won't be able to be a teacher anymore! You don't deserve to be after what you've done to my son! You call yourself a teacher?"
Ethan and Oliver's eyes widened in shock. Oliver bit his lips trying to stop his tears from falling. "I-I'm sorry, Mr. Davino. I will do as you say. I will leave this town and I won't even dare to be a teacher anymore."
Ethan turned and looked at Oliver in shock and disbelief. "O-Oliver? You're just saying that, right?" Oliver didn't respond and even looked at Ethan. He ignored him completely like he was not there.
"Don't do this! We love each other! I'm willing to cut my ties with my fam—" Before Ethan could finish his words, Oliver slapped his cheeks. Mr. Davino was about to say something but his wife stopped him.
Oliver looked at Ethan in anger. "Grow up, Ethan. Stop being a kid. As an adult I should take responsibility. Forget about what mistakes we made and find a girl. You're not like me, you're just confused because you are young."
"W-What? Oliver—"
"That's enough! Get out the f**k of here, Mr. Elyas!"
Oliver was about to apologize again when Ms. Davino signals him that he should go now and that was enough. He was about to turn his back but change his mind. Ethan thought that Oliver changed his mind and felt glad but this happiness was brief when he saw Oliver prostrating to the floor.
Ethan was shocked and so was his family. "I'm sorry for being the dirty bastard that I am. I'm sorry for spreading my disease to your son. I hope that you will forget about what mistakes he made and will only blame me instead. I'm—"
"T-That's enough already, Oliver." Ethan's voice broke. Oliver's face was buried in the ground, it was only then that he realized how selfish he was. He didn't think of his actions and their consequences.
He stared at Oliver's back as he was getting far away from him. 'I won't ever love a man again,' as he thought of those words, the memories from where he confessed his feelings for Oliver resurfaced again.
THE classroom was quiet as a mouse and so was the hallway. Only the noise of the air conditioner and the clicking sound from the laptop filled the room.
Ethan has already finished answering his test papers and he could have passed them to the teacher in front of him and could have gone home already, but he didn't. He didn't want to. It was only now that he got a good look at his teacher and breathed the same air as him without the rest of his classmates populating the air.
Oliver noticed that his student, Ethan, was looking at him. He stopped what he was doing on his laptop and raised his raised eyebrows at him. He didn't bother asking what was wrong as he had an idea of what was wrong, him, of course. No one really liked Oliver in this school. Students, teachers, and workers even. So that's why he couldn't bother asking when he already knew the answer. He was hated because of his sexuality. It's already 2015 for christ's sake! Well, the school was very secluded and so maybe the reason for it being so conservative, but still, there should be no excuses for someone to be so homophobic!
Oliver can't help but think that maybe getting a job in catholic schools was better, but it's not like he has a choice in the first place, does he? He was abandoned and thrown here by his own parents! Saying that he can be healed here and because he is surrounded by nothing but men he will get sick of men and get hungry for women instead.
What logic, really! It's ridiculous! Because of how angry he was, Oliver didn't realize he was typing very hard. He almost broke his brand-new laptop. He took a deep breath and calmed himself before asking his student, "Are you done?"
In a panic, Ethan quickly faced his test papers again. Clicking his pen and acting like he was reading a very difficult question.
Seeing that Ethan was still answering, Oliver paid no mind and continued what he was doing to his laptop, playing a game. He was bored to the bone. He can't just leave his student alone. It was supposed to be his day off but he was called by Ethan's parents to torture— tutor their son. Oliver was given no choice since he can't decline the only people who do not hate him in this town because he was gay.
Ethan's parents were very accepting and so he is slightly happy to help their son. Slightly, because he was truly honored but he also hated it at the same time. He will be stuck with Ethan for two weeks! Well, the parent told him that if Ethan will be able to learn everything in just a week he can stop tutoring him but will still get the same salary.
It was the first time Oliver had to tutor someone so he researched what he had to do. He first gave Ethan something to answer so he will be able to figure out what to teach him and what Oliver needs to do to teach him properly. Even though he hated being a teacher he still wanted to do what he should do. He didn't want to half-ass his job just because he didn't want to be a teacher.
Minutes had passed but Ethan was still not done with his test papers.
'Was the question I gave him really that hard?' Oliver can't help but ask himself. Oliver looked at the time on his phone, three hours had passed and he had already beaten 20 levels of the game he was playing yet Ethan was still not done. From what he knew, Ethan wasn't exactly dumb but was just lazy. Even when he wasn't attending his classes he could still answer and get the second-highest marks in his class.
Oliver frowned and closed his laptop. Ethan flinched and stopped staring at his teacher when he saw him close his laptop. He was worried that he was caught staring at his teacher again. He quickly gets back with his papers and reads the question that he has already answered. As he was busy faking, he didn't notice that Oliver was behind him and looking at Ethan while holding back his anger.
"Since when were you done answering?" Oliver couldn't hide his irritation. He always gets pranked by his students and surely soon he will explode.
"Oh! f**k!" Ethan almost fell from his chair. He almost cursed again when he saw and realized he was caught.
Ethan tried his best to think of an excuse but he couldn't think as the scent of the perfume from his teacher entered his nose. He can't describe it but he really wanted to eat him. He thinks that it's pheromone perfume since there is no way he gets attracted to someone of the same s*x just because of a f*****g perfume!
"Smells so good." Realizing what he had just uttered he covered his mouth so hard that he accidentally hit his mouth and made a sound.
Oliver was confused by his student's behavior but didn't want to care and bothered asking. He was just there as their teacher. Although he is being earnest with his job, he didn't want to be their second mother. `Your teacher is your second mother? Bullshit!'
Oliver sighed. "Give your paper and I'll check it."
Ethan tidied his clothes and sighed in relief before he gave his papers to Oliver. He was glad that his teacher wasn't asking him why he was faking it and wondered whether his teacher didn't hear what he said.
With the paper in Oliver's hand, he returned to his table and sat to check Ethan's paper. He was about to take his pen when he heard a rustling noise. He saw Ethan standing with his backpack in his bag. His eyebrows raise unconsciously. Ethan didn't notice that Oliver was staring at him.
"Ethan, where are you going?" Oliver asks.
Ethan's eyes widened. "A-Ah… I-I'm going home?" he replied, unsure.
"You can't go home yet. After I check your paper."
Ethan tried to hide his smile but his dimple was already showing. If he could scream he would have done it already. He sat back quickly in his chair.
Oliver was checking Ethan's paper when he couldn't help but felt weird like someone was staring at him so intensely. He glanced at his student and saw that it was him. As their eyes met Ethan gave Oliver a friendly smile. Oliver didn't smile back and just stared at him weirdly. He waited for Ethan to stop smiling but the kid is weird. Oliver decided to leave his student alone and check his paper as quickly as he could. He felt so weird being stared at, he felt naked.
Oliver was already on the second page when Ethan suddenly spoke "Teacher, are you really gay?"
"H-Huh?" The sound of the ballpen falling echoed across the room.
Oliver was taken aback by a sudden question from his student. He was asked many times by the other students too but he was taken aback by how the student in front of him asked him like it was a normal topic to be brought up.
"My classmates told me, you're gay and that you like the opposite gender. Is it true, Teacher? And the reason why you teach here is that it's an all-boys school."
Oliver didn't know what expression to show. His students have asked him several times the same question but he still doesn't know what to say. He did not choose to teach because first of all he had no intention of becoming a teacher and secondly he did not intend to teach in an all-boys school but because of his Father who is so against everything he does, he did not do anything.
If he could save up enough money, he would stop teaching and run away from home.
"I thought you already knew? Your parents knew."
Ethan shrugged, "So… since when did you know?"
"That I was gay?"
Ethan nodded.
Oliver hesitated. He doesn't have to answer this weird student of his and he can just ignore him, but after a second of hesitation, he still chose to answer. "Since I was ten, I guess." Ethan was about to raise another question but Oliver preceded him to speak. "Why are you so curious about it, Mr. Davino?"
"Cause I think I'm gay," Ethan said with no hesitation at all.
"W-What?" Oliver looks at him dumbfounded. 'Is this another prank again? They are getting creative.'
"I'm serious!"
"Of course, you are, Mr. Davino."
He heard Ethan whisper something but it was so low that he couldn't hear him properly. Oliver shook his head in disbelief. 'He is not like his parents at all. I guess, he is still a kid and is just like the other kids here.'
Oliver has already finished checking Ethan's paper. He is so glad that he will only tutor this pranker in just a week. He was confident that Ethan could get a high score and he really did. Most of the questions that Ethan got wrong were about his subject, history.
Ethan puts his laptop in his bag. He stood up and called Ethan to give him his test papers.
"See you tomorrow. I will only teach you my subject since you only got one correct answer and got a very perfect score in the rest." Oliver stared at Ethan who was busy checking his papers. Oliver bit his lip hard and finally, after a second of hesitation, he asked, "Is my subject… really that hard?"
Ethan was about to check the third page where the history questions were but stopped and looked at his teacher who was also looking at him, intensely as he waited for Ethan's answer.
"Ah… yes," Ethan lied. It wasn't hard and truthfully, history is his favorite subject. It just turns out that he has a huge crush on his teacher so he has to make a way for them to meet more often. He wanted them to exchange longer conversations.
"Is that so?" Oliver wasn't convinced as he looked at Ethan's face suspiciously. Oliver sighed and said, "Well, that's all. See you tomorrow. "
Seeing that his teacher, Mr. Oliver was standing already while holding his bag that contained his laptop and papers, Ethan stood up straight and tried to open his mouth but couldn't utter the words that he had in mind, it disappeared into thin air. Ethan stood there still, he really wanted to ask Oliver.
Oliver, who was about to walk out of the room, noticed that his student was acting strange again. Staring at the void and standing like he was frozen. He shook his head in disbelief. "Are you waiting for someone? I suggest that you should wait outside the school since I will be telling the guard to close the school already so that he can now go home. Everyone is tired, me included." Oliver also wants to go home already but this student of his just won't let him go without concern.
Ethan took a deep breath. "Is it bad to be gay?"
And again, Oliver was taken aback. He really wanted to ask his student what was with his question. Did this kid perhaps accidentally stumble on the gay section of the site he was using?
"No," he answered in annoyance. He waited for Ethan to speak again. "Is that all, Mr. Davino?"
"I like you, Sir Oliver."
