CHAPTER ONE

1844 Words
I have always been a quiet and reserved person. I never felt the need to share my personal life with anyone, not even my own family. I prefer to keep to myself and deal with my problems on my own. I believe that I can only solve my own problems by myself and without asking for help from other people. I also believe that if someone finds out about the problems I'm going through, they will only get worse and won't be solved. I would like to keep the trouble I got into a secret from my cousin because I'm afraid that what I did will reach my grandma. I don't want my grandmother to feel guilty because of what I have done. I also don't want to add myself to the pain she is suffering now. "You have what?" Marie was shocked when I told her about what I had done. I saw shock, guilt, and pity in her eyes the way she looked at me. Even before she spoke, I just held my breath. This is it, Enah. I know that she will react this way, especially since she knows me. She knew I couldn't do that; that's why, when I confessed to her, she was just like that. "W-What... A-Are..." she said, a bit shocked before she shook her head and laughed a bit. "You... you sold your womb, Enah? Are you dumb? Why the hell did you do that, Enah? Are you insane?" "I did that for Grandma, Marie—" "You know Grandma will be shocked when she finds out about this, Enah!" "I know, Marie. Can you just relax for now?" I asked, a bit irritated because of her voice. "I will fix this thing—" "How can I relax with what I have heard, huh? And fix this thing?" she asked before she laughed insultingly, which made me sigh in surrender. "How can you fix this thing, Enah? Will you return the check?" "No, Marie—" "Then, how?!" "I'll take care of that, okay?" I said, raising my voice because of irritation. Marie quickly shook her head in shock at what I had done. "I'll get through it. For now, you take care of Grandma," I added, making her sigh. My cousin, Marie, was the complete opposite of me. If I can sacrifice myself the wrong way, then she can't. Yes, my grandma raised us to be reserved and decent, but now that we are at this point in our lives, I think I will just put aside everything she taught me. To be the billionaire's babymaker is the only way I see to save her. To save the woman who raised me when I was a child. This is the only thing I see to make up for all the hardships she suffered while raising me. My grandma is my hero. Without her, I'm nothing. "Are you okay, Enah?" My thoughts about my grandmother disappeared when I heard Elijah ask me. I was in the backseat when I turned to look at him, and I was not surprised when I saw him looking at me through the rearview mirror. We are going to Elijah's family doctor's clinic today. We are about to undergo artificial insemination. Elijah wants a child, but he doesn't want it in the traditional way. It's not that I hope something will happen to us. It's in my favor, actually. I just don't know how to get pregnant using technology. Will technology make me pregnant? "You looked pale," he commented when he parked the car in the driveway. That's when he turned to look at me, which made me bite my lip and bow my head out of embarrassment. "Are you nervous?" "No," I replied, which made him sigh. "Actually, this is my first time undergoing artificial semenization—" "Insemination," he corrected, which made me blush a bit. "Of course, I'm the only one who offered you to be my personal surrogate," he said, nodding as if he were talking to himself. He then turned to look at me, which almost made me melt in my seat. "Don't worry, Doctor Benitez is a licensed doctor. He specializes in this kind of surgery, so you don't have to feel nervous," he said before he unbuckled his seatbelt and finally got out. I couldn't do anything but bite my lips, so I decided to get out of my seat, just like him. I'm already here. Is there anything else I can do if I withdraw from our agreement? And besides, Enah, you're doing this for your grandma. If you back out, it's like backing out of your grandmother's surgery. So, chill, Enah. Chill. Elijah and I went through all the necessary medical checks and consultations last week. Now, we are about to undergo the procedure that is needed to develop the child. I was pale when Elijah and I entered the clinic. Elijah noticed it earlier, but instead of criticizing my face, he decided to keep his mouth shut. He knew that one wrong word from him would make me back down; that's why he chose not to speak. Elijah made me sit in the waiting room. The doctor approached him to ask him a few personal questions, while I, on the other hand, couldn't do anything but fidget nervously. The doctor then turned to look at me and smiled reassuringly, as if he were trying to make me believe that the procedure was not that painful. "I'm glad I met you, Miss Enah," the doctor said when he approached me. "Don't worry, Elijah won't leave you, so... relax," he added, which made me smile a bit. Of course, I will carry his child. He can't leave me alone. His child will develop in my womb, so he can't just leave me like that! It didn't take long when a nurse came out to call my name. Elijah turned to look at me and nodded, so I couldn't do anything but follow the nurse to the room where the procedure would take place. Inside the room, I changed into a hospital gown while Elijah waited outside. I lay on the table, my legs in stirrups, as the doctor prepared for the procedure. "My nurse was the one who reviewed your medical checks and consultations last week. You must be healthy, right?" the doctor asked as I laid down. "I guess so," I replied. "Okay, then. Based on your look, you look okay," he added before he sat on his chair. "Okay, Enah, we're going to start the insemination now," the doctor said. I nodded to him, taking a deep breath in an attempt to relax. I felt a slight discomfort as the doctor inserted the catheter, but it was bearable. Instead of feeling the insertion of the catheter, I decided to just focus on my breathing as the doctor inserted the sperm into my uterus. After a few minutes, it was over. I lay there for a few more minutes, as instructed by the doctor, before getting dressed and leaving the clinic with discomfort in my face. Elijah was patiently waiting in the waiting room when I saw him. I saw the impatience in his look, but I also can't deny that he is handsome with his appearance now. I don't have any information about him. All I know is that he is a billionaire, and he and his cousin Canary come from a rich family and have an affluent background. Canary told me that Elijah doesn't want to have a child in the traditional way. She also told me that Elijah had a bad breakup with his ex, and she knew that was the reason why he didn't love anymore. I thought at first that he had a medical condition wherein he would not be able to have children, but when I shared that with Canary, she just laughed at me. "Our family is known as dominant, Enah," she said when I asked her before. "If my cousin becomes your husband, he won't stop having you. You will be the one to give in to his passion for s*x. Maybe he won't stop you from having children," she said. My face blushed a bit when Elijah turned to look at me. His irritated and serious look gradually faded when our eyes met each other. I couldn't do anything but swallow the lump in my throat before I averted my eyes from him and approached his seat. "Is everything going well?" he asked as he stood up. I slowly nodded at him before caressing my stomach. "I think so," I replied. Elijah was silent when we walked out of the clinic. He also drove me to the restaurant where I worked, which is why I wasn't surprised when I saw the looks of my coworkers. "Thank you for the ride," I said before I turned my back on him. Even before I could walk away, I felt his hand on my arm, which is why I immediately returned to my place in front of him. His eyes were damn serious. His brows were furrowed when he slowly turned to look directly into my eyes. "I... want you to quit your job, Enah," he said, which made my eyes widen a bit. I don't want to leave my job! I won't be able to pay my apartment rent and grandma's medical expenses if I quit my job! "E-Elijah..." I said before I chuckled nervously, especially when his brows narrowed even more. "Elijah, I can't do that. I have a lot of bills to pay. I can't quit my job just because you want—" "This is for the sake of my child, Enah," he said, gritting his teeth as if I had said something he could be upset with. "I don't want you to work from now on. I will shoulder your bills if that's what scares you." "Then this is the life I had, Elijah," I said, which made him more irritated. "I don't want your money. I don't want you to shoulder my bills. I don't want you to meddle with my life—" "What about my child, then?" he asked, raising his voice, which made me jump a bit. "I am paying you, Enah, so that my child's condition will be better. I am doing this for the sake of my child, not yours," he said. Does this mean he only cares about the child? "What about me, then?" I asked, chuckling a bit to ease the pain in my chest. "Yes, you paid me to carry your child, but it's not because you paid me; you have the right to control my life, Elijah. Remember this: you only paid for my womb to have a child, not my whole being," I said before I turned my back on him. Not because I'm his personal babymaker; he has the right to control my life. He only paid for my womb to bear his child, not my whole being.
