PROLOGUE
They say that if you really love that person, you will do everything you can to make them feel at ease without making them suffer. You will do everything you can, even at the cost of your own happiness, just so they can have a good life. That's what I'm doing right now. Growing up in a small province in the Philippines, life was never easy for me. My family was poor and lived in a small house made of bamboo and straw. My parents passed away in a tragic accident when I was just a young girl, so my grandmother has been the only family I've had for a long time. When my parents were alive, my father was a farmer, while my mother was a street vendor who sold rice pudding every morning. Life in the provinces is not easy, especially for a girl like me. We don't have much money, so every day is a struggle. My grandmother works odd jobs just to make ends meet, but it's still not enough. I often have to help her out by doing odd jobs as well. We live in a small house made with bamboo and straw, and we don't have much furniture or luxuries. But we have each other, and that's all that matters. Now that my grandmother is sick, I think this is the right time for me to show her that I am making up for all the hardships she suffered just to raise me. My grandmother needs an urgent operation, and doing this job is the only option I see to save the woman who has fed and raised me. I was mindlessly flipping through job listings at the local coffee shop when I felt someone's gaze on me. It wasn't that long when someone walked towards the table I was sitting at. I looked up to see a man in a sharp suit with piercing brown eyes and a confident smirk. His presence demanded attention, and I couldn't help but feel drawn to him. "Hello," he greeted me, and he took a seat across from me. I couldn't help but look at him with surprise. His voice is smooth and deep, but his eyes looked so serious when he turned to look at me. "If I'm not mistaken, my cousin already told you what I want and what your job would be," he added, which made me blush a bit when our eyes met each other. What Canary said was true. He has an aura that is really intimidating. "Yeah," I answered before I bowed my head because it seemed like looking directly at his eyes made my legs tremble a bit. I don't know if it's just because of the job he's offering that makes my knees tremble, or maybe I just feel a bit intimidated by his presence. This man is not just a man. He's a f*****g tycoon. A f*****g billionaire! Elijah is a successful business owner. He's a billionaire who needs a personal babymaker. The job would pay well and come with benefits, but most importantly, it would help his family continue their bloodline. He handed me a thick agreement and asked me to sign it when we finished talking about the agreement he discussed. "I've been searching for a suitable candidate, and I believe you would be the perfect fit. Don't worry because before we met today, I had you run a background investigation," he said, which did not surprise me. He stared at me seriously, which made me bite my tongue. "If you agree to the agreement, you will be financially compensated for each child you bear for me. I will cover things like the expected timeline for pregnancy, medical expenses, and any other important needs you need. You will also receive financial support from me during and after the pregnancy." His proposal looks great, but I can't help but feel fear for myself. This is just a proposal. All he needs is a child. What if... something bad happens? What if Grandma finds out that I sold myself just to finance her operation? I admit that at first, when we met each other at the bar, I was taken aback by his proposal. I had never heard of such a job before. I hesitated, conflicted by the idea of carrying someone else's child. But when I remembered my grandmother, who was in the hospital and in need of an urgent operation, I knew I couldn't afford it on my own. The money from this job could help save her life. This is the only thing that could save her life, Enah. Elijah noticed the hesitation in my eyes, so he chuckled a little before leaning back in his seat. I couldn't do anything but look away because of the fear that he might have seen in my eyes. "What's wrong, Enah?" he asked before I saw a playful smile forming on his lips. "Are you having second thoughts about my proposal?" "It's not like that, Mr. Cameron," I replied almost in a whisper, to which he slowly nodded. "I just don't know why an agreement is needed." "Excuse me?" "Can't we just have a child together without all of this legal stuff?" I asked, which didn't change his reaction. When I realized what was said, I quickly shook my head. "I-I mean... there's no need for an agreement. I promise you, I won't run—" "This agreement is for the protection of both of us, Enah," answered Elijah, which made me bite my lip. "I made this agreement so that there are no misunderstandings in the future. I am not afraid that you will take my children away from me, Enah. I can find my own ways just to haunt you if you do that," he added. I couldn't do anything other than stare at the thick pages of the agreement that he pushed closer to me. I looked into Elijah's intense eyes and felt a pang of guilt. He smiled reassuringly at me. He seemed sincere in his need for a babymaker, and that only made the guilt I felt even worse. "What's your decision, Enah?" "I don't know," I replied, which narrowed his eyes. "This seems like a big decision to make." He nodded his head as if he understood what I was going for at that time. "I understand your hesitation, Enah, but let me sweeten our deal," he said before he smiled and leaned closer to me to whisper. "If you sign our agreement, I will also cover all expenses for your grandmother, who is in the hospital now for an urgent operation. How's that?" Because of what he said, my eyes widened because of so much shock at what he said. I didn't even expect that he already knew that! "What the..." I said, a bit stuttered because of shock at what he said. "H-How did you know about that? How did y-you... How did you know that my grandmother was in the hospital?" I asked. He smiled sweetly at me, which made me sigh. Even Canary doesn't know that my grandmother is in the hospital. I never once told my boss or my coworkers that my grandmother was in the hospital. All they know is that I have a financial problem, but I didn't say it had anything to do with my grandmother in the province. "I like to do my research," he said to me, which made me sigh. Okay, that's it. He told me a while ago that he had run background research on me, so I wasn't even surprised about how he found out about my grandmother. "So, what's your decision, Enah?" he asked after a couple of minutes of looking at me with his piercing eyes. "If you don't want this agreement—" "I've made my decision," I said, cutting him off. "I'll sign the agreement." Elijah Luis Cameron needed a personal babymaker, and I knew I could fulfill that role. With trembling hands, I took the agreement and pen from Elijah's hand, which was stiffened by my sudden decision. As soon as the pen hit the paper when I signed it, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, especially when I heard Elijah sighing in relief. After signing the agreement, I hurriedly returned it to Elijah. His serious eyes a while ago were immediately replaced by happiness, and it was evident on his face when he looked at my signature on the contract. After his eyes lingered on the contract, he took out a check and signed it right in front of me. He then later handled it for me, which I slowly took from his hand. My eyes were a bit teary when I saw half a million written on the check. Enough to cover up my grandmother's surgery. "T-This is..." "That is enough to cover your grandmother's operation and medical expenses. She'll be taken care of, Enah," he said before ending the discussion between the two of us. Even though I feel afraid of the possible consequences of the agreement I signed, I can't help but feel a sense of relief because my grandmother will finally be operated on. Reassurance washed over me. I had made the right decision. You made the right decision, Enah. This is for the sake of your grandmother. You can do everything you can for her, even if it means your own happiness, in exchange. Even if it means becoming a billionaire's babymaker.
