Beginning...
He had just finished his secret wedding to Althea, yet his father's words continued to echo relentlessly in his mind.
"If you go through with that marriage, the entire George family will disown you."
Those were the words he couldn't erase from his thoughts.
Even so, he loved his wife. And he would never allow anyone to destroy what they had.
His parents had always opposed their relationship.
That was why the wedding they had just celebrated took place without their blessing.
Only four friends had witnessed their union… the same people who signed their marriage certificate as witnesses.
“Congratulations to both of you,” Nervana greeted them with a smile.
She hugged Althea before leaning closer and whispering softly, “Take good care of your husband. Don’t let another woman steal him away from you.”
Althea frowned slightly at the remark.
A moment later, Nervana stepped away from the newlyweds.
Without meaning to, Althea glanced at Theo… the man who was now her husband.
Goodness...
Her husband was incredibly handsome.
Their wedding was finally over, and now she had every right to call him hers.
But then she accidentally caught him looking at Nervana.
She was about to get his attention when Alice, the person she considered her closest friend, approached them. Among the four, Alice had always been the kindest.
“Althea, you should leave now. The rain might get worse,” Alice reminded her.
“Thank you, everyone,” Althea said with a warm smile.
The four of their friends consisted of two couples, and like Theo and Althea, all of them were successful in their respective careers.
Soon, the newlyweds boarded Theo’s private helicopter.
“Honey, maybe we should postpone the honeymoon,” Althea suggested. “The weather is terrible.”
“My love, this trip is important for us,” Theo explained patiently. “Besides, this is the only time the hospital could give me off. They only approved a one-month leave because of our wedding.”
“But it’s frightening... the wind is too strong.”
“Trust me,” he said, gently squeezing her hand. “Nothing bad is going to happen to us, okay?”
Althea said nothing more. Instead, she rested her head on her husband's shoulder.
She understood him.
Throughout their three-year relationship, they had gone no further than kisses.
Now that they were finally married, she knew Theo had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.
As soon as the helicopter lifted into the air, Theo pulled the curtain closed between them and the pilot.
Then he gently captured her lips in a kiss. She could feel the longing and desire he had been holding back for years. And for the first time, Althea didn't pull away.
Because she felt exactly the same. She closed her eyes as she felt the warmth of his touch against her skin.
His hands moved gently over her body while he occasionally whispered sweet words into her ear.
“My love... I don't think I can wait until we reach our destination anymore,” Theo murmured softly.
A smile curved Althea's lips as she felt the tension between them.
“Honey... Can I touch it?” she asked quietly.
“Of course,” Theo replied with a smile. “Everything I have is yours.”
She smiled and responded to his kiss once more.
But suddenly, she pushed him away when she felt something strange.
“Honey, what's wrong?” Theo asked in concern.
“Don't you notice it?” she said uneasily. “There's something wrong with the helicopter...”
“There’s nothing wrong,” he replied. “You're overthinking things.”
Theo leaned in and kissed her again…
But at the next instant, the helicopter suddenly plunged downward.
Althea screamed as terror consumed her. She felt Theo wrap his arms tightly around her.
With nothing else she could do, she shut her eyes.
-
Slowly, Althea opened her eyes.
The bright light blinded her, forcing her to close them again.
But she immediately snapped them open when angry voices erupted around her.
“You b***h! This is all your fault!”
“W-What are you talking about?” she asked, still feeling dizzy and disoriented.
“I'll kill you!” the older woman screamed before slapping her repeatedly.
“Mark my words… you will never get close to my son! And if he never wakes up, you'll die too!”
“W-What happened to my husband?” she asked weakly.
“Husband?” the woman spat. “My son is not your husband! There was never any marriage between the two of you!”
“What you're saying is impossible,” Althea protested. “Theo and I got married. We even had four friends who witnessed our wedding!”
“What friends are you talking about?” the woman asked coldly. “Do you mean Nervana and Alice?”
“Yes! They were among the friends who witnessed Theo's and my wedding.”
Then she turned toward Nervana.
“Nervana, tell them the truth. Tell them that Theo is my husband.”
“Althea... what are you talking about?” Nervana replied.
Althea's brows furrowed in confusion. How could she not know?
“What’s wrong with you, Nervana?” Althea demanded. “The four of you were our witnesses. You even signed Theo’s and my marriage certificate!”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Althea,” Nervana replied. “As a matter of fact... I’m the one who’s supposed to marry Theo. We’re the ones in love.”
“That’s not true...”
“Althea, Nervana is telling the truth,” another voice interrupted. “And the reason you’re in this situation is that you held Theo at gunpoint and forced him onto the helicopter. You were trying to escape from the mental hospital.”
“Mental hospital? What are you talking about?”
“You’ve been confined to a psychiatric institution by your family for the past three months. Your mind broke down because of severe depression. You can’t accept the downfall of your career. And after what happened, you were transferred here to Care Mental Hospital.”
“T-Then what about my marriage to Theo?” she asked through trembling lips, tears filling her eyes as her heart ached from everything she was hearing.
“All of that was just a delusion,” the woman replied. “There was never any wedding, Althea. And as for why Theo is in the hospital... your psychiatrist asked him to visit you. You kept talking about my fiancé, Theo, and no one else,” Nervana added.
“Excuse me, everyone. Visiting hours are over. The patient needs to rest now.”
Althea turned when she heard the deep baritone voice of a man.
She saw that he was wearing a doctor's coat.
Which meant… he was her doctor?
Tall, handsome, broad-shouldered and with a pair of calm, melancholy eyes.
Althea was about to speak and ask him a question when a sharp pain suddenly shot through her head.
She clutched both temples.
Then she felt something pierce her skin.
Her body gradually weakened… until darkness consumed her and she lost consciousness.
