The Love I Could Never Keep

THE LOVE I COULD NEVER KEEPChapter One: The Day I Met HerMy name is Daniel, and before I met Amara, I believed love was something that happened in movies and songs.I had watched people fall in love in stories. I had heard people talk about butterflies in their stomachs, sleepless nights, and the feeling of having someone who made the whole world seem less lonely. But I never really understood it.I was seventeen when I met her.It was a Monday morning, the kind of morning when the sky looked grey and the air felt unusually cold. I was sitting at the back of my classroom, staring through the window while pretending to listen to my teacher. Then the classroom door opened.A girl walked in.She had a small backpack hanging from one shoulder, and her dark hair fell gently around her face. She looked nervous as she stood beside the teacher."Class, we have a new student," the teacher announced. "Her name is Amara."Amara smiled shyly."Please make her feel welcome."The teacher looked around the classroom before pointing toward the empty seat beside me."Amara, you can sit there."My heart suddenly started beating faster. She walked toward me and sat down."Hi," she whispered."Hi," I replied. That was all.Just one word from her.But somehow, I remembered it for the rest of the day.During lunch, she sat alone beneath a large tree near the school field. I don't know why I walked toward her. Maybe I wanted to be friendly. Maybe something inside me already knew that she was going to become important to me."Can I sit here?" I asked. She looked up and smiled."Sure."I sat beside her.We talked for almost an hour. She told me she had recently moved to the city with her mother. She loved music, books, and watching the sunset. She hated crowded places and couldn't stand people who lied.I told her about my dreams of becoming an architect. When the bell rang, she looked at me and said, "You're actually easy to talk to."I smiled."So are you."She laughed. That laugh stayed with me.I didn't know it then, but that was the beginning of the most beautiful and painful chapter of my life.Chapter Two: FallingAfter that day, Amara and I became friends. We started spending almost every day together. We studied together. We ate lunch together. We walked home together whenever our houses were in the same direction. She became the first person I wanted to tell everything.Whenever something funny happened, I wanted to tell her.Whenever I was sad, I wanted to hear her voice.Whenever I achieved something, she was the first person I looked for.Slowly, without realizing it, I fell in love with her.It wasn't one dramatic moment. It happened quietly. It happened when she remembered how I liked my coffee. It happened when she noticed I was upset without me saying anything. It happened when she rested her head on my shoulder while we watched the sunset. It happened when she called me one night because she couldn't sleep, and we talked until two in the morning."Daniel?" she asked."Yes?""Do you think two people can meet at the wrong time?"I thought about it."Maybe.""Why?""Because sometimes you can love someone and still not be able to stay with them."There was silence on the phone. Then she whispered, "That's sad.""Why did you ask?""I don't know."She changed the subject. But her question stayed in my mind.A few weeks later, I finally told her how I felt.We were sitting beneath the same tree where we had first eaten lunch together."Amara."She looked at me."I need to tell you something.""Okay.""I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I started falling in love with you."She didn't speak. My heart pounded. Then she smiled."I was wondering when you would finally say it."I stared at her."What?"She laughed."I like you too, Daniel."For a moment, the entire world disappeared. There was only her.She reached for my hand. And I held it.That was the happiest day of my life.Chapter Three: UsBeing with Amara felt like living inside a dream. We weren't perfect. We argued sometimes. We misunderstood each other. We got jealous. But we always found our way back to each other. She called me her safe place.I called her my home. One evening, we sat together on a hill watching the sun disappear."I wish this moment could last forever," she said.I looked at her."It can."She smiled."Nothing lasts forever, Daniel.""Then I'll make sure I remember every second."She leaned against me."I love you."I looked at her."I love you too."I believed those words would be enough.I believed love could solve everything.I was wrong.Chapter Four: The ChangeEverything started changing when Amara received a letter. She wouldn't tell me what it said. For days, she became distant. She stopped calling. Her messages became shorter. When I asked what was wrong, she always said, "Nothing."One afternoon, I found her crying behind the school building.I rushed toward her."Amara, what's wrong?"She quickly wip
