Secret bunkers, hidden prisons, and a possible way to become human again? Mara always pictured royalty as most teenage girls do with beautiful castles, stunning crowns, and endless spoils. Unfortunately for her, nothing could be further from the truth. After the murder of her mother by the hands of strange creatures, Mara’s world spirals out of control. Her human body begins to transform into something new. With a massive set of wings and stunning horns decorating her head, Mara runs for her life in the mountains of her home of Perri, Pennsylvania.
Taking refuge in the forgotten coal mines that dotted the landscape, she peers over her once magnificent town. A place that now lays as a shell of its former self. Miles away, Mara notices fire erupting from an abandoned highway that was once the lifeblood of Perri. Mara unknowingly stumbles on a horrid group of beasts escaping from a burning crack in the highway and into our world. Knowing they had something to do with her situation, she confronts the group in a burst of rage. Ferric, the mysterious leader of the horde, tries to reason with Mara by offering friendship and answers.
Trusting Ferric was a mistake Mara won’t make twice, she comes to discover that she is the last Royal Aylyte born from her home world of Torrid. Ferric won’t risk a royal derailing his plans and attacks Mara and leaves her for dead, determined to make our world his own. Surviving her ordeal, angry and with nowhere to go, Mara turns to the only person she can trust, her father. As the man struggles with what he can do and what he has to do; he reveals everything to his daughter about her past and what their hometown of Perri has really been hiding.
