Plaasrivier - The ghost town situated in the center of South Africa, home to Margarete de Beer and the oppressive religious cult who raised her and the generation before her. Margarete was born different from other girls. She has always heard and seen things that weren't there. Her mother, Ilse, insists that Margarete was born with a sixth sense, or "die helm" as the South African Afrikaner community would describe it. However, her father Johann, isn't buying it. He believes Margarete is rebellious and he is determined to punish the devil out of her. Margarete has endured her fathers cruel punishments all her life, until she turned 16, when the visions and voices started appearing more often. Margarete started having fits and she would have violent outburst. She would try and hurt herself and the others around her. Her father believes firmly that she is possessed, however, Pastor Gerhard du Preez has convinced her family to hand Margarete over to the church, who will then place her in the local Asylum. In the Asylum, Margarete discovers the true intentions of Pastor Gerhard. Her faith in the God she was taught to trust is fading. And the true colours of the tight knit community of Plaasrivier and the residents there of are becoming clearer to her each day she spends in the asylum, or the House of Hell. Are these things side effects of the medication she is being given to treat her illness? Are the horrific things she witnessed only pigments of her imagination? Is she being delusional? Is her father right? Could she be possessed, or could she be ill, or are her dreadful experiences a sign of her mental delusion.
