Synopsis for The Impossible Dream
Seventeen-year-old Aleck is a Borg, part human, part machine. She and her younger twin brothers, Shem and Payton, were the only children to survive an invasion of their home planet by the Sharlakar, savage aliens who eat other sentient beings. Their bodies nearly destroyed in the attack, the children were changed, along with other survivors, into cyborgs by the evil General Wallock. The general uses their Borg programming to maintain complete control over them, forcing them to not only fight in the war, but also to commit horrible atrocities. After temporarily defeating the Sharlakar, the general gives the children leave to return home, to the planet Vandar, to live with their Uncle Donald and Aunt Karla on the family farm.
Over the course of months, Aleck overcomes the mental scars of her experiences and begins to piece a normal life together, attending high school. On the very first day at school, she meets tech-genius Ben, the observant Odette, and Jareth, disgraced high prince of the planet Rillia who is pretending to be an ordinary high-school student in order to maintain anonymity. The four quickly become fast friends, but the bond between Jareth and Aleck is deeper – the two discover that they can communicate telepathically. Aleck’s uncle recognizes Jareth’s identity at once and, at first, is a little hesitant of their relationship, but after Jareth helps out on the farm and proves himself to be decent and honourable, he’s welcomed by the family with open arms.
Soon after, the Sharlakar return and begin to invade more worlds. Aleck is called back into service. Before she leaves, Ben develops and uploads a virus into her system that gives her control over her body once again. When she returns to General Wallock’s ship, she quickly infects the rest of the cyborgs, and weeks later, the cyborgs are independent enough to overthrow the evil general. With near unanimous vote, the cyborgs elect Aleck to be their next high general.
While she is gone, however, Jareth plunges into a near catatonic state. He and Aleck are mind mates, a condition so rare as to be almost unique, and their separation nearly destroys his mind. Discovered by Aleck’s twin sister Alexia, Jareth is placed into therapy, and slowly, his mind begins to heal.
Aleck learns that Vandarian General Wallock had lured the Sharlakar into Rillian space – an act of war. In order to stop the Rillians from waging war against her home planet, Aleck must take on the blood debt incurred. This means leading the combined Rillian and Vandarian fleet against the Sharlakar until they are driven from Rillian space. The final condition of the debt is that she do this alongside Jareth, who has been called back by the king to become high admiral of the Rillian armada.
Aleck and Jareth lead the fight against the Sharlakar, with Jareth commanding the ships and Aleck leading the marines. In the beginning, they argue over strategy and tactics, with Jareth focused on the bigger picture and Aleck concentrating on saving as many lives as possible. Eventually, they learn to appreciate the other’s viewpoint, and the become an incredibly effective team, leading their forces to victory after victory.
During a battle on a distant planet, Alexia and Jareth become trapped by an ice storm. Facing certain death, Jareth presents Aleck with this marriage arm band, and she accepts, and the two become wed. Upon their first kiss, the power of their mind meld creates a protective cocoon that keeps them safe and warm until they are rescued. Soon after, the cyborgs and ships’ crews hold a public ceremony, where they are wed once again.
The war continues, and Jareth’s brothers join the fight. Other brothers of his discover that Jareth’s earlier disgrace was engineered by the king’s advisors, the treacherous psycho psychologists. Eventually, the Rillian and Vandarian forces are victorious, and Aleck and Jareth finally track down the Sharlakar leader and kill him.
With the war ended for now, Jareth and Aleck return to Vandar. With the fleet in orbit around the planet, Aleck presents an ultimatum – if Borgs, half-bloods, and the disabled are not made equal citizens under the law, then the fleet will remove them from the planet to go start a new home on another world. After some pushback, the president is able to convince the Congress to sign the agreement, and the cyborgs agree to reveal the identity of their high general in one year’s time. Desperately needing rest, Jareth and Aleck return to the farm, moving in with Aleck’s aunt and uncle. Jareth gets a job teaching at the school and Aleck re-enrols in school, and life becomes somewhat normal again.
