JUNGLE REPUBLIC : The Animal ExperimentThe first thing Keeti learned about humans was that they were afraid of silence. The second thing he learned was that humans were dangerous when they heard it.He was only a young monkey then, small enough to disappear beneath the broad leaves of a plantain tree and light enough to cross a branch without making it bend.He did not understand politics. He did not understand money. He did not understand why some animals had everything while others searched through rotten fruit for something to eat.He understood hunger. He understood fear. And, most of all, he understood his mother's voice.“Keeti.”The sound came softly through the darkness.Keeti opened his eyes. His mother's body was curled around him, protecting him from the cold night air. Her fur was warm against his face.“Stay close,” she whispered.Keeti pressed himself against her.“Are they coming?”His mother did not answer immediately.Somewhere beyond the trees, a branch cracked. Then another. His mother's arms tightened around him.“Don't make a sound.”Keeti listened.Footsteps.Not four feet.Two.Humans.His mother lifted her head.Through a gap in the leaves, Keeti saw a tiny orange light moving between the trees.A lantern. Then another. His heart began to beat faster. His mother stood.“Run.”Keeti stared at her.“Run where?”“Anywhere.”“But—”“KEETI!”He had never heard her scream his name like that.He ran.He did not know where he was going. He simply ran.Branches struck his face. Leaves scratched his eyes. His tiny hands grabbed whatever they could find as he climbed higher and higher.Behind him came shouting.“Over there!”“Don't let it escape!”“Where's the mother?”Keeti looked back. His mother was still on the ground. She was fighting.A human raised something long and metallic. There was a flash. Then a sound that seemed to split the entire forest in half.Keeti froze. His mother fell. For several seconds, the jungle became completely silent.Keeti couldn't breathe.“Mother?”Nothing.He climbed down.Slowly.One branch. Then another.“Mother?”She didn't move.Keeti reached her.He touched her face.It was still warm.“Wake up.”Nothing.He shook her.“Wake up.”His voice broke.“Please.”Behind him, the humans were approaching.Keeti looked toward them. One of them pointed.“There!”Keeti ran.He ran until his lungs burned. He ran until his legs stopped obeying him.He ran until the forest disappeared behind him.And eventually, he collapsed.---Morning came with rain.Keeti woke beneath a fallen tree. His stomach hurt. His head hurt. But the worst pain was inside his chest. He didn't know where he was.He didn't know where to go.He only knew one thing. He was alone. Then he smelled something.Food.Keeti lifted his head.A human boy stood several metres away. The boy was carrying a basket. He couldn't have been much older than Keeti would have been if Keeti were human. He stared at the monkey.Keeti stared back. The boy slowly placed the basket on the ground.Inside were bananas.Keeti's stomach growled. The boy smiled.“Hungry?”Keeti didn't understand the word. But he understood the banana. He crawled toward it.The boy reached out.Keeti immediately backed away. The boy stopped.“Easy.”Keeti watched him carefully. The boy took a banana from the basket, peeled it, and ate half. Then he placed the other half on the ground.Keeti waited. The boy stepped backward.Keeti grabbed the banana and disappeared beneath the fallen tree. The boy laughed.“Okay.”He picked up the basket.“I'll call you Keeti.”Keeti's ears moved. He didn't know what the strange sound meant. But somehow, hearing his name from a human mouth made his heart ache. The boy walked away.Keeti followed. Not because he trusted the human. Not yet.But because he had nowhere else to go.---The boy's father owned a small farm on the edge of the forest. His name was Jonah.Jonah had always wanted to keep a monkey. His father hated the idea.“Animals belong in the forest.”But when Jonah returned with Keeti, weak and covered in mud, his father didn't throw him out.Instead, he looked at the little monkey for a long time.“Where did you find him?”Jonah pointed toward the forest.“Alone?”Jonah nodded. His father sighed.“Then keep him until he can survive.”That was how Keeti entered the human world. At first, he lived in a wooden cage. Then Jonah began leaving the door open.Keeti learned that humans had strange objects. They had machines that made noise. They had radios. They had televisions. They had phones. They had guns. And they had words.Thousands of them.Keeti listened.Every day.Jonah taught him simple ones.“Food.”Keeti pointed.“Banana.”“Water.”Keeti pointed.“House.”Keeti pointed.
