You never forget your first love, unless you’re too young to really know what that means. It’s been almost 20 years and though we’ve chatted online, it pales to the sight of him standing in front of me. We’ve shared pictures, talked on the phone a couple of times, but am I what he hoped for?
I can’t help the the all consuming butterflies that come rushing back or the weak feeling in my knees. I’m thankful to have a railing beside me, I don’t know if I could keep myself standing otherwise. His face is hard to read as he approaches me. Regret for time lost? Disappointment that I wasn’t what he expected? Hope that I’m really here? I’m not sure what I expected, but the last thing I was expecting was pain.

I feel like I can’t stop moving even though I know I’m completely still. Standing there in an airport terminal, waiting for the girl I haven’t laid eyes on in 18 years. I see her before she even knows I’m there and no amount of pictures, phone calls or time could’ve prepared me for what I saw. She was even more beautiful than I remembered. The girl who’s bright blonde, shoulder length hair I knew before was now much paler and nearly to her waist.
As she looked around, seeming unsure of where to go, her eyes caught me. She wasn’t expecting me. I wanted to surprise her, and I could tell I had been successful. I couldn’t hold back, I had to go to her.
