When the bones whisper
Updated at Jul 3, 2025, 16:34
She wore a cross around her neck and a curse beneath her skin. Seventeen-year-old Naledi was raised in a devout Christian household. Deep in rural Limpopo, South Africa. Where the bible was law and spirits were lies. But from a young age, she saw what no one else could-the restless dead, the whispers beneath the soil, shadows that moved just beyond sight. Labeled "cursed" and feared by her family. They said that she stared too long into shadows. That her dreams smelled of smoke and whispered of death. Seeing what others cannot made her an outsider in her own village. Naledi learned to hide her gift, to close her eyes to the unseen world calling her name. Until the day she met Tinyiko. He was no living boy- He was a spirit trapped between life and death, Haunting the riverbank with eyes full of secrets and sorrow. Only Naledi could see him, hear his voice, feel the pull of his desperate need for release. As they grew closer, their impossible love blossomed, but with it came terrifying truths: Tinyiko's death was no accident, and the shadows that trapped him were far darker than anyone imagined. To save him Naledi must embrace the very power her family and faith condemn-she must twasa, initiate as a sangoma-traditional healer and step into a world of ancestral magic- bone throwing and dangerous rituals. But every step she takes risks breaking her family apart and awakening forces better left undisturbed.
