THE INVISIBLE MAN
Updated at Sep 2, 2025, 14:57
The novel begins in the segregated South, where the narrator is a bright, ambitious young man who wins a scholarship to a Black college after enduring the humiliating “Battle Royal,” a degrading fight staged for the amusement of white men. He enters college full of hope, believing education and obedience will earn him respect and success. However, an incident with a white benefactor and a poor farmer leads to his expulsion, shattering his dreams. Forced to move to Harlem in search of opportunity, the narrator experiences the harsh realities of urban life. He finds work, struggles with exploitation, and eventually joins a political organization called the Brotherhood, which claims to fight for equality and justice. At first, he feels empowered — finally seen and valued for his intelligence and oratory skills. But soon, he discovers that the Brotherhood, like the college and the white benefactors before, is merely using him as a tool for its own agenda. As Harlem erupts in social unrest, the narrator becomes disillusioned with politics, authority, and the institutions that claim to liberate but in fact manipulate and exploit Black people. Betrayed and hunted, he retreats underground, literally living in a basement filled with stolen electricity and lights. From this hidden space, he reflects on his life and declares himself “invisible,” unseen by a society blinded by racism and prejudice.
