Episode 1: The Gathering at the Canopy (SETTING: Under a massive white memorial canopy erected outside the community health post in the neighborhood. Rain has just stopped, leaving cool air and damp soil. Hundreds of community members are gathered around.)MAMA BLESSING: (Wiping her eyes with the corner of her lace wrapper, speaking to Nurse Grace) Look at this crowd, Nurse Grace. I knew people loved Deola, but I never expected the whole street to shut down for NURSE GRACE: (Nodding softly, holding a program binder) True grace does not shout, Mama Blessing. Deola worked in quietness, but her touch reached every home in this district. Look over there—even Pa Amos came out.PA AMOS: (Leaning heavily on his carved wooden walking stick, stepping toward them with a steady gait) I would have crawled here on my hands and knees if I had to. Twenty years ago, when that deep cut almost took my leg, it was Mama Simi who cleaned it at her back door with her own hands. Jide didn't even know his wife was saving my life.MAMA BLESSING: (Sighing softly) Ah, Jide... speaking of him, look at where he is standing.(JIDE stands far at the edge of the canopy, dressed in a muted black tunic. He looks aged, diminished, and completely isolated from the warmth of the crowd.)PA AMOS: (Shaking his head) He looks like a ghost in his own town. He spent years trying to lock her behind his high iron gate, thinking he was the big man. Now his mother is late and gone, his prestige is empty, and he is standing alone in the crowd while the world honors his wife.LANRE: (Gently placing a hand on his older sister’s shoulder near the front row) Are you ready, sister? Everyone is waiting.SIMI: (Dressed in a crisp, spotless nurse's uniform with a silver emblem on her collar, looking down at her notes) I’ve been preparing for this speech my whole life, Lanre. I just want to make sure I do her justice.LANRE: (Smiling warmly) You are wearing her dream on your shoulders today, Simi. She’s already proud.(SIMI steps up to the wooden podium at the front of the canopy. The low chatter of the crowd gradually fades into absolute silence.)SIMI: (Clearing her throat gently, her voice ringing clear through the microphone) Welcome, everyone. Look around you today. When my mother, Deola, was a young woman, her dreams of formal medical school were taken from her. She was told that without a degree, a title, or a certificate, her hands had no power to heal. She was placed inside a home with high walls and told to be silent.(JIDE lowers his head slightly at the edge of the crowd, his jaw tightening.)SIMI: (Continuing, looking directly at the crowd) But my mother proved that healing is not granted by a piece of paper. It is given by God to those who possess the heart to care. Behind those walls, she created a secret pantry. She bandaged your wounds, she checked your blood pressures, and she held your hands when you had nowhere else to turn. She became a silent sanctuary for an entire community long before anyone built a roof over it.MAMA BLESSING: (Calling out softly from the front row) Amen! Speak it, my child!SIMI: (Smiling through tears) She poured her life into us—into my brother Lanre, into me, and into every family sitting under this canopy today. I stand before you in this uniform not because I chose it on my own, but because my mother’s dream was reborn in me. And so, on behalf of our family and this community, we announce that this building behind us is no longer just a storeroom clinic. Today, it is officially registered as the Deola Memorial Health Center.(The crowd erupts into loud applause, cheers, and emotional embraces. PA AMOS raises his walking stick high in salute. SIMI looks up toward the open sky with a calm, peaceful smile.)SIMI: (Softly to herself) Your gate is wide open now, Mummy. And your sanctuary will live forever.
