Maddie Morgan has dealt with crippling night terrors her entire life -- night terrors which, for reasons she cannot fathom, are in fact visions of death. Her grandmother, her fourth grade teacher, that guy on the bus last week who was kind enough to lend her his umbrella... she's seen all of them, and many others, die in her dreams and then die in real life. It's something she's learned to deal with and learned even better to hide, because her parents were well on their way to seeking mental help. When a new school brings her a whole crop of potential friends to haunt her dreams, she sees more than she'd ever bargained for: a death that is clearly not that far in the future, and that is violent enough to shake her out of complacency. She realizes that she has to do something with the gift she's given and save a life. Armed with abundant new knowledge thanks to her stoic and serious mentor Nicholas, Maddie must learn for herself if it's better to follow the rules or to choose her own path, and if fate is something that can truly be molded and changed.
