I was in the fifth year of my PhD when my advisor refused to let me graduate. She wanted to keep me around as free labor, so she kept finding excuses to delay my dissertation. She claimed to be on leave, but she was actually hiding in her office, refusing to see me. My dissertation had already produced three papers accepted by top-tier SCI journals, yet she still said, "Getting published doesn't mean you've met my standards." I replied with a simple "OK" emoji. She accused me of having a bad attitude and blocked me on the spot. I went to my graduate program coordinator, the department chair, even legal aid. Not a single person was willing to help. What none of them knew was that over the past five years, I had written my advisor's proposals, carried out her research projects, and even ghostwrote the first-author paper she had published under her husband's name. If they wouldn't let me earn my degree with dignity, then I'd make sure the entire university went down with her.
