It is about a young man of seventeen, called Benjamin, having to make his way in the world all alone, his parents died in a prairie fire, and with no neighbors near by, he had no choice but to make it on his own or die. Then a year later, he comes across a young woman who was starving, and almost dead, and so he takes her in, and gives her a home, and love that she so badly needed. Anna is also alone, and scared, her parents were killed by apache's, and so, she is left trying to fend for herself, but she does not know how to hunt or fish even. She winds up wandering the prairie, and almost dies, but she gets picked up by a young man, and taken to a handsomely built cabin in a valley not to far from where she had been laying.
