A cup of hot coffee splashed onto my neck. It was burning, but not a single word came from my mouthâonly a painful moan. Unfortunately, there was no one to notice.
I am Amelia Finley, the eldest daughter of Dexter Finley. Ever since I started living with my dad, my life has become a living hell. Not a single day has passed peacefully. It's as if they can't start a day without hurting me physically and mentally.
My stepmother and her daughter, who is known as my dad's only child, pretend to be innocent in front of him. But all they do is accuse me, hit me, and throw whatever they have in their hands at me. It doesn't matter whether it's hot or cold.
Nothing bothered me more than the terrible things they said about my mother. I know those things aren't true, but I still don't know what happened back then. Why did my mother leave me in my father's care? If only she knew how I was living hereâas their slave.
Dad knows everything, yet he chooses not to see my pain. His friends, clients, and everyone who visits this house think I am their maid. He never bothers to correct them, as if he believes it too.
I wanted to study, so I asked for permission. My stepmother agreed, but only if I completed all the house chores before going to college. When I asked about working at a café, she agreed again, but she cut off my pocket money and ordered me to clean the house before going to bed.
That is my daily routine.
I wake up early in the morning and do all the housework, even though there are plenty of maids. Then I go to college, work at a cafĂ© afterward, and come home to wash dishes and clean the kitchen, dining room, and the rest of the house. If there's a party, I have to stay awake until everyone leavesânot to enjoy it, but to clean up afterward.
I can't even sleep without their permission, yet this is my houseâmy father's house. Isn't that funny?
As usual, after doing everything and washing the coffee off my body, I took a bath and went to college. I still don't know what I did wrong while making the coffee, yet she didn't like it.
"Hey, beauty!"
My best friend, Asha, came over and linked her arm through mine.
I smiled. "Hi."
"Someone looks happy today. Hmm... let me guess. Kiyan is back, huh?" she teased.
I laughed.
Oh yes, Kiyan is my boyfriend. He was lucky enough to get a chance to study abroad only a few months after we started dating. He didn't want to leave me, but I insisted. Finally, after a year, he was coming back.
Tonight, I was going to meet him.
"Asha, tell me. What should I give him as a gift?" I asked.
"Just buy a new dress for yourself, honey. It's been a long time since you've bought anything for yourself, yet you want to buy him a gift. Besides, it's your eighteenth birthday," she said with care and affection.
I smiled.
She was the best friend anyone could ask for.
But I didn't agree with her. For three years, Kiyan had chased me and tried to win my heart. Back then, I was afraid of falling in love, but he made me trust him. He was always there whenever I needed him. After three years, I finally said yes. Unfortunately, we didn't get much time together.
Just a few steps away from his apartment, I held a gift bag containing a watch and a handwritten card. He didn't know I was coming. I wanted to surprise him. I had told him I would come after work, but I hadn't mentioned that I had taken the day off.
Asha hadn't agreed with buying him a gift, but I wanted to do something special for him.
With the gift and card in my hands, I opened the apartment door, which was already slightly open.
What I saw made me freeze.
My boyfriend and my half-sister were kissing passionately on his bed.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
"Oh, Mia, baby, I've waited so long. I love you," Kiyan moaned.
Mia giggled. "If you obey me and do what I ask, trust me, you'll get even more surprising rewards. You know that, right, baby?"
Then Kiyan laughed.
"Oh, speaking of her, I forgot to tell you. She said she'll come tonight after work. What a fool. She actually believes I'm in love with her. I was only doing what you wanted me to do."
He pulled Mia closer.
"And honestly, who would ever love someone like her? She's disgusting. If it weren't for you, trust me, baby, I wouldn't have even given her a second glance."
My heart shattered.
So all this time, I had been living a lie.
But why?
Why did they play with my feelings?
What had I ever done so wrong to deserve this?
Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.
