THE FIRE WITHIN
Updated at Jan 4, 2024, 13:52
She watched the flames devour her home, her memories, her life. She felt nothing but numbness, as if the fire had burned away her soul. She heard the sirens, the screams, the cries, but they sounded distant and unreal. She knew her mom was inside, trapped and helpless, but she couldn't move, couldn't speak, couldn't breathe. She didn't know how long she stood there, staring at the inferno, until someone grabbed her arm and pulled her away. It was her dad, his face blackened and bloody, his eyes wild and desperate. He hugged her tight, sobbing and shaking, but she didn't hug him back. She didn't feel his warmth, his pain, his love. She felt nothing at all. They took her to the hospital, where they treated her for smoke inhalation and minor burns. They told her that her mom didn't make it, that she died of carbon monoxide poisoning before the firefighters could reach her. They told her that it was an accident, that a faulty wire had sparked the blaze. They told her that they were sorry, that they were there for her, that they would help her get through this. But she didn't listen, didn't care, didn't believe. She knew it was her fault, that she had caused the fire, that she had killed her mom. She remembered the fight they had that morning, the harsh words they exchanged, the door she slammed in her mom's face. She remembered the wish she made, the curse she uttered, the hate she felt. She wished her mom would disappear, would leave her alone, would die. And she did. She hated herself, hated her dad, hated the world. She blamed herself, blamed her dad, blamed the world. She wanted to die, to join her mom, to end her misery. But she didn't. She lived, she survived, she endured. She moved to a new house, a new school, a new life. She met new people, new friends, new enemies. She faced new challenges, new problems, new opportunities. But she didn't change, didn't heal, didn't grow. She remained cold, bitter, angry. She pushed away her dad, her friends, her teachers. She isolated herself, rejected help, avoided happiness. She carried the fire within, the fire that consumed her, the fire that destroyed her. Until she met him. He was different, he was special, he was kind. He saw her, he understood her, he loved her. He reached out to her, he talked to her, he listened to her. He made her laugh, he made her cry, he made her feel. He ignited the fire within, the fire that warmed her, the fire that saved her. He helped her heal, he helped her grow, he helped her change. He showed her forgiveness, he showed her hope, he showed her love. He gave her a reason to live, a reason to survive, a reason to endure. He gave her a new life, a new home, a new family. He gave her a new fire, a fire within, a fire that burned bright and strong.
