Eighteen-year-old Anna Rodriguez has never been particularly close to her family. Quiet and introverted, she is content keeping to herself, living an ordinary life in a family that has always struggled to make ends meet.
Everything changes when Anna's grandfather, a man she barely remembers, dies alone in an accident.
With nowhere else to go, Anna's family moves into his old house.
At first, the house seems nothing more than an old, forgotten home filled with belongings from a life Anna never knew. But while exploring the house, she discovers a locked basement—and inside it, an old telephone that should no longer work.
Then, one night, it rings.
On the other end is a boy.
He knows the house.
He knows things about Anna that he shouldn't.
And despite never having met him, Anna slowly finds herself becoming closer to him than she has ever been to anyone in her own family.
As their conversations continue, strange clues begin appearing throughout the house. Old photographs, forgotten diaries, missing pages, and dates that don't make sense slowly reveal that the boy is connected to Anna's grandfather—and to a secret buried decades in the past.
What begins as a mysterious telephone call becomes a journey through loneliness, family, regret, and the lives people leave behind.
Because sometimes, the person you wish you had known your whole life is someone you have already met.
