OFF LIMIT

Off Limit I was nineteen the first time I understood what real desires felt like. Not the harmless kind of crush girls my age are supposed to have. The kind that sits in your chest like a stone and never quite dissolves. I ran from it anyway. Five years, an entire ocean, and a master's degree later, I told myself I had outrun it for good. I was wrong. He is my best friend's father. He was my own father's closest friend and business partner, inseparable until the day my father's heart simply stopped and took half of my world with it. He was there when it happened. He held my mother while she wept. He stood beside me at the funeral, jaw tight, saying nothing because there was nothing to say. I left not long after that. Told everyone it was for the degree. The truth was simpler and far more humiliating. I needed distance from a man who had never once looked at me the way I looked at him, and who never would, because in his mind I was still a girl going through a phase, something to be waited out gently, like a fever that would eventually break. It didn't break. It just went quiet. Coming home was supposed to be easy. Then he walked into the room at dinner, and every careful thing I had built over five years came apart in a single breath. He looks older in the ways that matter. Sharper around the eyes, more silver at his temples. He still commands a room without raising his voice. But underneath the composure, something in him seems to notice me differently now. A pause before he speaks. A look held a second too long before he catches himself. I tell myself I imagined it. I have to. Because the alternative is more dangerous than anything I have ever wanted. We talk that night, low and honest, after everyone else has gone to bed. Somewhere in that conversation the years fall away, and I am not the girl with a harmless crush anymore. I am a woman sitting across from a man I have wanted for half a decade, terrified of what happens if he ever finds out. So I bury it again. Losing him would be a loss I could not survive. Then my world tilts, another blow I never see coming, and he is the one who catches me. Steady. Unshaken. Something in me that has been holding on for years finally breaks. I reach for him. For one suspended moment I think he might let me. Then his hands close gently around my wrists and he steps back. No, he says, soft but final. I deserve someone without his history, his ghosts, without twenty years standing between us. I watch what it costs him to say it. And I understand, with a certainty that terrifies me, that he is not pushing me away because he feels nothing. He is pushing me away because he feels too much. He calls himself off limits. I am starting to think he is wrong.
