The protagonist regains consciousness in the slums of a large city—dirty, noisy, smelly, and surprisingly inventive when it comes to beating people up. His body is that of a child: weak, starving, bruised, with no money, no friends, and no proper name. In his head are fragmented memories from another life and a system assistant, EVA, who can analyze situations, offer hints, calculate probabilities, and deliver sarcastic remarks as if she were designed not by engineers, but by world-weary governesses.
The world resembles the 18th century: carriages, flintlock pistols, rapiers, wigs, salons, duels, aristocracy, guilds, the urban poor, bureaucrats, the secret police, and the eternal conviction of the upper classes that the common folk exist solely for taxes, applause, and bad statistics.
