The Tooth Fairy
The darkness loomed the sky, embracing the atmosphere with chilly air. As I flapped my wings, I glided towards a flowery balcony and wandered inside the room until I landed upon a mattress.
A boy was already in his peaceful slumber so I did what I need to. I crouched and took something under the pillow—a tooth which I had to collect every night. Yep, kinda gross but that’s our job as tooth fairies.
“Gotcha.” I rubbed the tooth with my arm and it shone against the lamp shade. I smiled. What a jackpot—
“A tooth fairy!”
“Ah!” In surprise, I leaped and hid behind the curtains and shivered. Oh, my fae! The boy woke up!
“Hey, I won’t hurt you...” he said softly. “Here, have this candy.”
I peeked at him. He greeted me with a genuine smile. Tempted to taste the sweet candy, I slowly accepted the candy and licked it.
“It’s yummy, right?” He boasted, flashing his teeth with a gap in the middle.
I giggled like ringing bells. He startled and stared at me curiously. “Hey, you took my tooth under my pillow. What are you gonna do with it?”
I paused. “You... You shouldn’t have seen me.”
“But why?” He frowned. “Promise, I won’t tell anyone that fairies exist, I swear!”
“Sorry.” I need to make him sleep again and forget this happened. I was about to lift my hand and cast a magic on him when the door opened.
I immediately returned behind the curtains. Bummer!
His mother entered. “Why are you still awake, Owl?”
“A-Ah, nothing!” He stood stiffly and trailed off. “There was just a... very beautiful bird that entered my room. It took my tooth with her, Mom.” His eyes passed by my direction and he smiled in secret. My heart jumped with an emotion I couldn’t name.
Did he just cover me up?
“A bird took your tooth? Well, that’s strange. Have you seen where it flew? Let me check.” She was about to walk to the window where I was hiding when he stopped her.
“N-No need, Mom! It’s probably gone.”
She chuckled. “Fine, fine. Go to sleep. You have school tomorrow, remember?”
“Yes. Goodnight, Mom.”
Once the door closed, he dashed towards the curtains. “Phew, that was close.” He peeked at me, meeting our eyes. “Are you okay?”
My face heated up. I turned my wings to him in embarrassment. “Y-Yes... and I have to go before anyone enters again.” I flew up the window. “Bye!”
“Wait! What’s your name?”
I contemplated. Should I tell him? After much thought, I looked him over my shoulder and answered. “Joyy. Joyy’s my name.”
I didn’t wait his reaction. I ascended towards the night sky dwindled by the sparkling moon, stars, and city lights and cupped my burning cheeks.
Oh, my fae. This is the first time I talked with a human and... it feels wonderful.
Now I remember it, I didn’t cast the erasing magic on him and I didn’t regret it. He seems to be a pretty nice boy after all.

After two fairy days, I strangely came back to Owl’s house. Did he lost another tooth? I wondered. Oh well, at least I can get to see him again while he’s asleep!
Once I landed to his bed, I pulled the tooth under his pillow then suddenly someone turned on the lamp shade. “Joyy... Is that you?”
“Owl, y-you’re awake!”
“It’s you!” He hugged me tightly, enough not to crush my tiny body. He smiled, flashing his teeth with three gaps this time.
“What happened to your teeth?” My mouth just automatically moved on its own.
He squatted. “I’ve been waiting for you to come, Joyy.”
“Huh?”
“I really want to see you again but I don’t know how. So I keep eating candies until one of them fall off. But you still didn’t appear, so I didn’t give up! Look, I lost five!” He opened his mouth and pointed the two more gaps inside.
I gasped. He lost five teeth in approximately three months? Oh, Fae. I think I just committed a mistake.
“What took you so long, Joyy?” His voice sounded sulking.
“I’m sorry. It’s just that...” The human years is way different than ours. In the fairy realm, our first meeting just happened the other night but in his world, approximately three months have already passed. How can I explain that to a twelve-year-old boy?
I sighed and flew in front of his face. “You should take care of your teeth from now on, Owl.”
“But if I do... how can I see you again?”
His question had me startled. Then I frowned as I finally made my decision. Right. My existence won’t do any good to him. Fairies must stay as a secret.
“Owl.”
“Hmm?”
“It’s nice meeting you.”
He smiled. “It’s enchanting to meet you too, Joyy.”
“Enchanting?”
He nodded, fixating his gaze to me. “You look enchanting. I could stare at you forever.”
My heart thumped fast. I clutched my chest to stop it, but it was no use. With my heart pounding hard, I smiled. You’re gonna grow into a fine man, I’m sure of that, Owl.
“Good night.” I kissed the tip of his nose and the magic dust eventually glimmered around us.
He fell on his bed, sleeping soundly—an indication that the magic had already took its effect. Until I become
