Ellie just started her second year of high school, and she’s left all alone inside a house that’s dead silent. Her parents have left her after losing more than anyone should ever have to lose. Come along as Ellie fights through high school life with her best friends at her side, watch as her friend group grows and becomes her family.
It was the summer before my sophomore year when a bloodied boy was dropped off in my driveway while I was waiting for my best friends to pick me up for movie night. Meg was dropping off her younger brothers at their friend’s house for a sleepover; I was too shocked by the boy who had just been dumped in my driveway that my first call was to Meg. She’s the only one who could help me get him to a hospital; I hurried over to him with my phone pressed to my ear.
I knelt down to turn him over as I placed his head on my lap. My eyes meet his gray ones before I can even ask if he’s all right. He takes my phone from my hands and ends the call without even looking at who it was.
“No cops or ambulances, my parents would kill me,” says the gray-eyed stranger.
“I wasn’t calling 911,” I say.
